Default 586 Enablers! Help please

After a very good range session we walked through their shop. In the revolver case was a consignment 4inch 586 with target stocks, I would rate it at 92-95% condition. Serial # AZB9515. Is it a 586-3? Is it from 1988ish? It was $750.00 and I have it on hold. It would not be a financial hardship, but I didn't buy it because I really wasn't planning on another piece in 2023 and I didn't need to impulse it. I know which way I'm leaning, can any of you give me a push? Please

It's worth it, you only live once, you may never see one for sale again, it will go up in value, they don't make them like that anymore, it will be fun to shoot............need any more excuses?......

That’s a pretty decent price, I’d buy it right now. Nothing like a nice blue 4 inch vintage 586 to finish out the year! Congratulations!

If it is mechanically sound, $750 for a 4-inch, blued 586 with honest wear (not rusty or pitted) is a reasonable price in today's market.

Default I usually keep $1000 in my

safe at the range, but that went to an impulse buy in June. I pulled the cash from my safe at home, it is in my wallet. After puppy play group tomorrow morning we will swing by the range store, fill out the 4473, pay and wait (again). The 586 is on hold and out of the display case.

Thanks Enablers!

That's the best news I've read today.

Just think, you can ALWAYS sell it if you think you made an impulse buy, but more than likely you WON'T.

Great find!! Hard to beat a vintage 586. They are drying up quickly. You did well on the price also. I believe they will only continue to rise in value. Good job!

Definitely has a bit of finish wear, but looks nice. It's definitely shooter grade, so when it gets paroled into your possession, go shoot it!

You might like to call the factory about a 1987 recall on early 586s. My s/n ABUxxx is back there now for the free fix. Phone number is 800/331-0852.

Yeah appears to be a no dash,OP!
Nice.
I would not bother w the recall.
My no dash 586 never went that route. In fact,I installed a target hammer ! Much better.

FWIW, there’s a 95% 4” 586 with factory targets at the Vegas Bass Pro. It’s been sitting there for at least a month @ $899.

My 586 no dash from 1983. { no M} Came to me in a trade. Not something that gets out much. It lead to a 686-3, 6" and a 686-6, 5" Pro Series. They are good guns to have! Bob

The only problem with 586s in "really good" to "as new in box" condition... is that because of their condition they end up as safe queens!

Ask me how I know!!! Even got an "anib" 4" 586-? with the factory round butt from 95/96.

586's seem to bring 10% to 15% above 686's just due to fewer of them around.

No S&W are getting any cheaper, I have 7 586's and 686+ pre-locks in different barrel lengths. Pre-locks are gold. The guns with the locks will follow after the new two peace barrel shroud. But it, shoot and enjoy it.

My 586-7 seven shooter with lock removed and the 'Plug' in. I walked into my local gun shop, saw this and laid my coins down. Did not need another one, but there you have it.

OK, I was browsing a LGS recently and saw something that I don’t ever recall seeing before, a 6” 586. The next thing that I know, it followed me home!

There was a bit of rust on the outside of the barrel near the muzzle that cleaned up somewhat and is hard to see after I applied some touch-up blueing. I didn’t even have to clean it up since it’s previous owner did a really nice job of cleaning as a few patches verified. It is a no-dash gun with no M stamp, and target grips.

The only problem I have is that it shoots to the left with the rear sight all the way to the right.

I would add a couple of pictures if I could figure out how to do it.

Yay and Congratulations! Tomorrow morning's mission will be to pick up my 586. I am looking forward to modestly working on it's finish, with a detailed clean and lube. Possible range time on Wednesday, but more likely Sunday.

Good luck with your sights, hoping for an easy solution!

You’ll love it! And soon forget the price. I’ve always had a sentimental attachment to Model 19s, but I think the 4-inch is a bit mean to shoot with full-charge .357s. The 586 is much more user-friendly. If I could only have one and had to choose between the two, regret to say it, but it would be the 586 for shooting the magnums. If all you’ll shoot is .38s, then they’re both nice. Congrats on your new revolver.

Thumbs up

I bought a new 4" 586 very soon after S&W introduced them. Carried it on duty with the infamous 125 grain JHP .357 ammo, and shot it off duty with my own Magnum reloads. Never a problem, and I did not have the "M" mod done. One of the nicest revolvers I ever owned. Sold it to a friend when I acquired a new 686.

My pal shot only his reloads, and reported the cylinder was tying up. He did send it in for the M modification. I know he used cast bullets, but other than that, I don't know what his reload menu consisted of.

Enjoy your new 586. Fine revolvers, IMHO.

Default I finally get to clean it again!

Well, we all hope to be pleased by the things we purchase and this thing pleases very, very much. Accompanied by a 28-2 and a 19-5 for comparison it exceeded all expectations. Smoother in every way compared to my beloved 28 and the 19. .38 cal from Federal in 158 and PPU in 130, .357 from Creedmore and New Republic in 158. Hundreds of flawless, accurate rounds down range. This isn't a review, just an acknowledgement that the 586 is an awesome revolver and I am very happy to have acquired (my first) one.

It would not be a financial hardship, but I didn't buy it because I really wasn't planning on another piece in 2023 and I didn't need to impulse it. I know which way I'm leaning, can any of you give me a push? Please
Great purchase! 750$ for a 586 is an absolute steal and I am happy it is going to someone who will shoot it well.
