Hi, may you please help me, I a looking for differences between 686 models. Except whay I can see (gripsn number of rounds), is there any difference inside ? Thank you (I hope models in Europe are the same than in USA)

I bought my first 686 in 1983 and my most recent in 2018 a 686 Plus four inch. I have owned at least six over the years.

My 686 Plus was by far the best and had a nice, smooth trigger right out of the box. I have fired 4100 rounds and not a problem. I would recommend that highly.

Nope, to my knowledge they're all identical from a mechanical perspective. Just different grips and capacities.

Are new looking exclusively at new? There are some differences over the years. The lock being the biggest and most obvious.

For new models the variations are generally minor and obvious.

Model 686 - Original stainless steel version. Six shots. Various barrel lengths.

Model 686+ (or Plus) - Seven shots. Various barrel lengths.

Model 686 Deluxe or 686+ Deluxe - Same as above, but with wood grips instead of the standard synthetic rubber grips.

I bought a new 586 soon after they were introduced, then soon afterward a 686. Later had several 6 and 7 shot versions. No difference internally. Still have an early 686, and a 686+ model. The 686+ has both 6 and 7-shot cylinders; both fit and function just fine. No difference internally.

I have no experience with the Deluxe model.

I understand there is no internal difference, but Deluxe has wood grips and satin finish.

I think the Satin finish may depend on the vintage. S&W and lots of gun companies have gone from a polished finish to a bead blasted type matte finish for cost savings I imagine.

All things being equal (price, availability etc.) The + is a no brainer.

Not really. Some prefer the 6 rounder because of speed loader options and that's what they're accustomed to. My two are 7 rounders which I prefer, but I sacrifice being able to use some popular speedloaders.

686 and 686+ (Pre-lock)

Hi, do you know why triggers and hammers color is darker (almost black) ? I saw this picture with trigger and hammer ?stainless?, I think this is nicer, is this OEM ? An option ? Thanks
