The 617 arrived in 1989, 4 and 6 inch. The 10 shot cylinder first showed up with the -2 in 1996. According to the Standard Catalog anyway.

I would go with 22hipower reply. I have a 617 no dash stainless recessed chambers. The 10 round cylinder came around much later. Mine is also a Lew Horton model with combat grips. I have never looked it up in the S&W catalogue till now. Can't find any info either. I may not be looking it up correctly.

A lot of references don't show that later 10 shot 617-2's had a stainless steel cylinder like mine. Also attached my 617 (no dash). I bought both of these new, the 6 shot is stock but the 10 shot has an LPA sight and Houge grip added.

Timely post for me.
This 617-1 came to my table last weekend.
Not much on .22 revolvers and have never
had a 617 before. But for five bens it became mine.
Selling prices are all over the board.
This one was wearing Pachmayer's(sp) and was dirty.
It cleaned up great.
6 shot.

A little more on my 6" 617 no dash. It is unfired box & papers. It is the only so called unfired revolver in my collection literally with zero turn line.
Paid $1500 last year with no complaints. Worth it to me.
