Hi guys!

Hoping someone might have a closer frame of ref on this one one - a 581 s/n AAA389x - should be '80, but am I correct to assume the low four-digit is also early in the year?

Along with another, far more uncommon piece, this was a find at a surprisingly decent local gun show recently. It's no safe queen and the stocks are not numbered to the gun but fit well, and there is very light fading to the bluing in some areas. The price however was hard to beat, being less than most Model 10s I've seen lately. Mechanically it's as solid as my beloved 6" 586 and the service grips actually make the 4" full lug revolver surprisingly svelte IMO.

Not one I had been looking for, let alone expecting, but pretty happy to have one of these added - I'll soon have a much more extensive post on my prize find of the weekend - a Model 520. :)

Any info on the date this might've shipped is appreciated. *Oh, this one has not had the firing pin recall/switch - given I only plan to occasionally shoot .38s and the earliness of this example, I currently don't plan to send it in.

Congrats on the expansion of your "L" frame herd. Nice early one too.
This is my earliest "L". Also a "AAA" prefix and factory-fired.

Her Stainless cousins; the 681's, handle the range duty in her absence.

Your 581 was part of the first run in 1980 although as mentioned above was not shipped until 1981. There was a recall to replace hammer nose and bushing. There would be the M over-stamp by the model mark if it has been back.

My show partner found this one that came into the Fairground show a while back. First run, no M. ANIB. He turned it over to me and later bought it back. We do that a lot. I've turned him into a S&W collector with the warning on how addictive such an activity can be.

Sorry, could not find the pictures.:o

Congratulations on a fine revolver. Love the 581.

Here’s a couple of my 581’s. A nickel 581 no dash and blued 581-1. Neither have the M modification and I’ve not had any issues shooting 357. The nickel 581 has an AAD prefix with logo on the right side.

This is another AAA serial numbered 581. I have the box and original stocks. Over the years I've owned nine "L" frame revolvers and sold most of them. I've kept this 581, a 681 and a 586. IMO, the 581 is one of the prettiest guns ever produced by S&W.

Still kicking myself for passing one up quite a few years ago. I recall around $350 or so. It had some rust spots …. Also missed out on a 681 for $399 which at the time I thought was over priced. Feel free to comment …. lol

I had a very good friend of mine that ran his department's firearms training and armory. He offered to get me a 681 for his cost and I said no. DUMB. My brother still has his Model 13 he bought in 1987. I was stuck on adjustable sights. I wasn't in law enforcement at the time and didn't appreciate fix sighted revolvers. The 581 is one very sweet revolver.

I picked up a shooter grade 581 no dash and have been very pleased with it. Been shooting it in my local ICORE games and it hasn’t failed me. Certainly a fun gun.

Congrats on your acquisition

I’ve always thought the 581/681 to be one of their best looking magnums and would think a 3” version in nickel would be a very cool balance to the series…I’ve never purchased one as I have had several 686s’ and two 586s’ but never the fixed sight model-maybe if the stars align one day! Until then, I don’t feel too naked with three adjustable sighted versions and a lot of other .357s’….congrats on your new distinguished combat magnum!
