Just picked up a nice S&W 66-2. 6 inch with tight lock-up. I think it's a 1982. Beautiful condition. I didn't pay much attention to the K frames, but they're getting expensive like everything else. I found this one very reasonable so I did a grab. This might be a good woods gun. Nice and light. Do people really like these? I'm new to K frame Smith's

You bought a very nice revolver. I like the model 66 K frame revolvers alot. They are trim and carry very nicely. Some prefer the 686 L frame revolvers because they are larger framed but I tend to prefer the model 66. It's a personal preference thing.

My 6" 66 was my first on line buy some 20 yrs ago , it is wonderfully balanced , and although my taste have changed , the gun is still very much a tack driver with 158gr SWC. If you like the gun try a 4" 66 or 67 which are IMHO the best of the stainless breed!

I bought one last summer from a friend. He bought it earlier in the year from the shop I work part time at while I waffled, a do I or don’t I need it thing on my part. I came in on a Friday intending to buy it only to find it gone. My manager said “your buddy bought it yesterday” so off I go sending texts to him, all good ribbing. I ended the series with “My parents warned me about people like you!”

Anyhow, he told me if he ever decided to sell it I had first chance. In May he decided to sell it to fund another purchase than changed his mind. He was afraid I’d be mad, I told him “It’d be pretty shallow and petty on my part if I did that” and he said again I had first place if he decided again.

In July I got the call, in good natured humor I said “Be there before you change your mind again!” We have a informal agreement that if I sell it he has first crack at it, that’s only fair.

Now he and I are talking about a 66-3 with a 2 1/2” barrel he wants me to buy, it’ll go well with that 6” and a 4” 66-1

I had one as a young patrolman and carried it on walking beat. Had the most beautiful set of tiger stripe target grips. Carried it in a Safariland elk suede lined thumb snap high ride holster. Had a trigger job done on it at the factory. Very comforting under top coat during the winter. Sadly had to sell it for wife’s medical expenses early in marriage along with others I still miss. Never really looked to replace it later in life. Have a 6inch model 17 I enjoy a lot.

I have a 2 1/2”, a 3” and a 4” Model 66. Haven’t gotten a 6”.

But at Model 66’s are great!

I own several Model 66s and 686s but like the K-frames better. I bought a six-inch 66-2 ten or so years ago for $400. It's my favorite target revolver since I added a Millett rear sight and target hammer and trigger (flash-chromed parts are harder to find than color-case hardened). I've often thought about returning it to S&W to have the integral front sight replaced with a Patridge but hate to alter it in a non-correctable manner.

Funny. Of all the 66's of which I am the humble steward, I do not own a 6" version.

Your post struck a nostalgic chord for me Ed.

As a brand new Cop, we had to purchase our own guns and leather. I got a S&W 66 No Dash 4" from my Road Captain that he had had tuned. He substituted CCH parts as flash chromed TT/TH were very hard to come by. I carried it for years and years until I foolishly sold it after retirement.

Many years later, local pawnshop, and voila...THERE IT IS. Except it wasn't, but it was set up identically to my uniform duty gun from years past. And I mean identically set up, down to the amazing trigger job on this one. This one will never be sold and is one of the most accurate handguns I own (and I own more than a few) Perhaps it's muscle memory, perhaps ergonomics, perhaps the tuning...perhaps all of the above, but it's my old friend back again, this time for good.

So yeah, the Ls and Ns are heavier duty (and heavier), but for all day comfort and ease of shooting with more inherent accuracy than most mortals possess...the K stands for King imo.

Target is from end of my first outing, 2 cylinders full plus 3 remaining rounds, at 30 yards...with my now 60 year old eyes. So yeah...KEEPER.

(at 22 yoa I was a BMF with a S&W 🙂 , group would have been 1/2 the size, but...getting old, whadda ya want?)
