Got real lucky last week and obtained a S&W model 66-8 3 inch, living in WA state I am in the waiting mode to pickup the beauty until 2-4-25.Firearm was tagged at a local shop as used but there are no marks, scratchs nor any sign of wear, no smoke rings on the cylinder face nor anywhere else on the piece, came with box all paperwork, lock and keys for the action lock.I have looked and searched for a S&W serial number lookup but get stopped at the end of the 1980's listings, I have had no luck as yet so joined this forum for info and because I like S&W revolvers,I bought a new Model 60-15 but it beatup my hand even with 38 spl.regular factory loads so I sold it as the old beatup hands need a bit heavier piece so I hope anyway. Anyone know how to easily look up serial numbers? S&W was no help with my last questions so have not called them. Thanks for any info you can share, Serial starts with DPE early 8 hundred numbers. Thanks for any info you want to share. Misc Shooter

Welcome to the Forum! Sorry that WA makes you wait so long to pick up your 66-8, that's got to be frustrating! Here in Florida, because I have a CCW permit, I can buy a gun and walk out the door with it. Anyway...your triple-alpha serial number ("DPE8xxx")leads me to believe your revolver was manufactured in 2020-2021. If you post a couple of pictures, including the end label on your box, we may be able to better identify the DOM. The PC code and Special Order info on the label often gives the date. The Model 66-8 was first introduced in 2014 (with a 2-piece 4-1/4" barrel) and titled "Model 66 Combat Magnum". It should also have a ball detent lockup in the yoke area. These are excellent stainless steel revolvers, and are extremely tough and dependable. Congratulations on your acquisition, and enjoy!

That's how it used to be here until a few years ago, sigh. Now to do that you need a C&R license and limit yourself to models at least 50 years old. But maybe that's just a good reason to seek out the older, classic stuff. Lots of great ones were made before 1975.

To the OP, welcome to the Forum! Post a few pics when you bring it home.

I may be mistaken but I believe the 66-8 is only offered in 4.25 and 2.75 inch barrels. I've owned one of the 4.25s and two of the 2.75s. They are solid guns and on reflection I would have kept one of smaller ones, but Ive been thinning the herd so to speak due to age.

Thanks for the info, will try for pictures a bit later when I get the procedure figured out. Thanks again

THanks for taking time to respond, info on the box says it is 3inch, did not have time to check when buying to many lookers wanting to hold and check it out. 2-4-25 pickup date will know for sure than. Thanks again.

S&W 66-8

Picked up the 66=8 2-4-25, someone put the wrong serial number on the salestag and sales person used it on the 4473 form, while waiting on paperwork I asked about the original box and was told no box came with firearm and the item being so clean and no wear or scrapes I again asked another sales person so after 2 other people looked and found the original box it was reveiled that the serial number was incorrect so back thru the paperwork and finally got the info off the box and gosh it matched the firearm numbers and the barrel is really a 2.75 length and serial nimber is DPE08XX instead of 800xx. I really have a problem with folks who know very little or nothing and will not let the buyer have a nice long look. Finally got the beauty home and went through a cleaning just to feel it's ready for a range visit tomorrow 2-7-25. Now to figure out the picture part.

Range session on 2/7/25 with the 66-8, fired 10 rds 357 158 gr swc hits were low to left, adjusted sight a bit up and right next 10 rds were at lower x ring and still left, another sight adjustment and next 10 rds were on the x ring but a bit low let it stand there and next 20 rds were within a 3 inch group at a distance of 25 ft. Hand was getting a bit tender so let it set there and will check again next range trip.So far happy with what it did.No pictures as RO said wait until a cold line but by than I forgot and left without pictures. Being older than dirt I need to do the pictures than not later. I will try again. I would like to thank those who tried to help with the info I was looking for but still do not have a mfg. date for the piece. going to call a collector in Oregon later for info if available from him. Nasty weather here in North Western WA state, snow and cold hanging in for some time now and just started to snow again. Everyone have a Happy Valentines day! Misc Shooter.
