629-4: Price check and, trade?
A Model 629-4 with 3" barrel, very good condition, has popped up for sale locally and I'm wondering if (a) $900 + tax (possibly $900 OTD) is a decent price and (b) should I trade an "old" model Ruger Blackhawk .357 4 5/8 barrel towards it? After all, 900 bucks is a nice chunk of change.
I don't really need this gun and will likely never even shoot it, I just think it's cool.
Any thoughts are welcomed.

I thinks it’s a fair price. Wouldn’t trade theRuger , especially if it didn’t get the update, and has all its clicks.
It’s a personal how much do I want it thing.

Sounds like a good ballpark price, 3" barrels are pretty rare, that's a plus.
I would not use a trade, normally you don't get near the value of the gun being traded.

I can't offer much advice on price of the 629-4, but I agree with others that I wouldn't trade the Ruger 3-screw on it.

“I don't really need it and likely will not shoot it” tells me all I need to know to advise keeping the Ruger and move on…

"BackPacker"
The revolver you have pictured is a "BackPacker"...this is a fairly scarce model...the Hogue grips are original and correct...the condition certainly warrants a $900 value...possibly a little more based on rarity...Roger

Think about this - if $900 is a low price of that 629, and I think it is, then the dealer paid even less than that for it. If he is going to resell your Ruger for an equally low price, he's going to give you a low price, too.
If you want to recover some of the money for the 629, sell the Ruger privately, perhaps on this Forum's classified section.

Gun stores being gun stores, they will probably give you no more than $400 for a Ruger SA .357. I would never trade/sell a gun to a gun store.

I had a chance to inspect it earlier today, and I'd say very good condition is about right, maybe a little better.
I'm going to think on it a bit.
I have to say I'm a bit surprised at some of the Blackhawk love expressed. It's in .357 Magnum BTW, if that matters to anyone.

Run down there and get that 629! Nine hundred is a great price for it and they are great fun to shoot.

I paid way too much for one of them but love shooting it. Many folks will tell you the -4 version is the best by the way. Last one with all the endurance fixes and traditional lockwork, Hammer nose etc.

It’s a bargain at that price, worth much more. And the -4 models are the best. But do not trade your Ruger in on it.

Your Ruger has my favorite barrel length for the single-action Blackhawk revolver. I'm one of the one's that has recommended that you not let your Blackhawk go, but of course you are the one that has to make that decision. One question, did at one time you really like your Blackhawk and enjoy owning it? If the answer is yes, I would stand by my advice. If the answer is no, that you didn't really have any attachment to it, then maybe letting it go is the right answer for you.

A 4 5/8” 357 Blackhawk I got for next to nothing is one of my favorite and most used revolvers, I don’t see selling it ever.
And I paid $799 for a 629-4 with the less desirable 8 3/8” barrel two months ago and thought I did okay. I wanted the 8 3/8” to cut into a nice 5” with centered roll marks or I’d have never considered it. I think $900 or maybe less if you can do some dealing is a good deal on that one.

PM me if you decide to get rid of the Ruger, and the 629 is a steal.

Here is my side of opinion, that beautiful BlackHawk deserves to be by you, perhaps in a nice carved leather hi-ride holster on those special occasions(and we are getting more of these occasions every day now) I would already be filling out the paperwork on the 629 (it would be on my hip when the Blackhawk needed a day off……..
