My first full lug.
Compliments from my late father. This 581 is one of several Smith's that I kept from his gun collection.
S&W says it dates to 1981. It's been carried and has the scuffs and dings to prove it, but it's in good condition overall. Definitely shooter grade that seems to have been carried more than it was shot.
It had a well used set of Pachmayr small size grips on it. I changed them for a set of silver washered targets that are later than 1981 but model/period correct (1982-1987 IIRC).
Like the pistol, they are in good shape with signs of use and they fit my mits much better. I think they match the pistol well and are definitely an improvement.
The pistol has great balance and I like the fixed sights. I'm looking forward to taking it out.

Great revolver..I like it better with the Pachmayr Presentation grips.Just looks like a working mans gun.

Nice! What a great reminder of your Dad.
4", square butt, blued and fixed sights = Everything you need & nothing you don't. Please share a range report when you've had it to the range.
I'm a fan of the small grip Pachy Presentations. I wish they were still available. I snag them at gun shows whenever I see them.

What a great revolver ! I know it’s partial paranoia but I worry about rubber on blue steel.
I like the wood targets.
Regardless, your Dad left you a great gun to remember him by.

Nice!
Nice! Outstanding to have a revolver that belonged to your Father. But, you gotta put some correct PC Magna grips on that old Service revolver! Enjoy that one!

There is something about the simplicity of these revolvers.
This is my Ohio Highway Patrol 681.
It's so smooth.

Nice find!
Welcome to the world of full lug barrels. It’s a slippery slope

Full lug on a 4" is fine. Not really a fan on the 6" although I do have a 6" full lug 686. I'm the fairly recent owner of a 5" full lug 629. It's also a lot more tolerable than a 6" full lug.
The fixed sight is certainly a lot more durable than the adjustable although I do like the adjustable sight picture better. Unfortunately the adjustable sights tend to get the crud beat out of them on vehicle door frames and office chairs too.
