How rare are M/629 No dash S & W's, I know they were only made for a short time in the early 1980's. How many were 4" barrel and how many 6" ? I'm fortunate to own three, two 4" one of which is factory test fired only and another same condition 6". I also have a shooter 4" that has been Magna ported.

The six inch is not rare. The 4 and 8 3/8 inch are not rare either, depending on one's definition of rare, but the P&R ones are desirable as they were produced only a year or so (1981). The -1 arrived in 1982. It is not uncommon to find examples that are pinned but not recessed and vice versa during the transition to the -1.

My SWAG on value is that ANIB a 4 or 8 3/8 would be $1500+ and a 6 perhaps $1200-$1350. Showing some use without box/papers/etc. probably around $1k. The only 4 inch I've actually bought was one used without box which turned up in a small LGS in the Panhandle about five years ago for $730 (photo below). Today I'd expect to see it where I shop priced at $1k-$1200.

I bought my first 4" no dash about 25-30 years ago, paid $600. for it, foolishly I let it get away from me. My current 4" was purchased about a year and a half ago, I paid $1050. for it. It's the last S & W I'd ever sell, lesson learned. I bought the two unfired examples as an investment, I may or may not add an 8 3/8".

629 no dash

The 629 no dash guns that are favored by collectors must be a 629 no dash, P&R frame, and have a "N" serial number prefix! The 4" and 8 3/8" were introduced in the early 1980s and shortly after the introduction S&W went to the alpha-numerical serial number system. The 4" and the 8 3/8" guns are more difficult to find!

The grips are from Curt Harlow, for my show pieces!

Chuck Norris fan

Dare I say that one of my favorite "feel good" cop shows is "Walker, Texas Ranger"? Walker (Chuck Norris) carried a 4" Model 629 in a crossdraw holster for the first season and into the 2nd season. However, since the show began in 1993 it's almost impossible to tell which version (629, 629-1 thru 629-4) he actually carried. I understand that "Walker" was a follow up to the action flick "Lone Wolf McQuade" (1983) where Chuck carried a 6" nickel Model 29. It was not P&R, so probably a Model 29-3. You're in good company with your Model 629s. I have a few .44 Magnums in my modest collection, but have yet to add a 629...it's on my list. Enjoy!

DOB 629 no dash N prefix

I scored this 629 no dash 6" in December 2023 from a private seller at the Crossroads show in PHX for $950, no box or anything else. Not a collector piece but a nice addition to my .44 Magnum accumulation. Please forgive the photography, it was early in the morning before coffee.

I've got a 4" 629-0 I bought over 20 years ago. I've killed a couple of deer with it but my older eyes would rather be hunting with the longer barrel. I'll find one eventually.
