Default Model 10-8 357 Magnum

I picked up a Model 10-8 4” in 357 Magnum, gun looks brand new. I have heard of Models of 10-6 & 10-7 in 357 Magnum but never 10-8. Anyone out there have any knowledge on this?

I'm aware that there were 10-6 variants in .357. IIRC, most if not all were made for NYSP. I do not recall any other dash models in .357, although it it not hard to ream the cylinder to get one. As far as I know, after these 10-6 variants turned out to have potential, the M13-1 came out and there was no M13 no dash.

Welcome to the S&W Forums. First, are you positive that it is a Model 10-8 and not a 10-6 with a weirdly stamped "6"? If it really is a 10-8, then I'm thinking it has been modified.

The firearm is definitely a Model 10-8 357 Magnum roll stamped on barrel, 357 Magnum shells fit in the cylinder, Gunsmith verified.

Welcome to the Forum. We'd sure like to see some pictures of that one. Like this one except 4 inch and stamped 357 Magnum?

So a 10-8 with a barrel roll marked as .357 Magnum and the cylinder is 357 Magnum? Interesting. Hard to believe someone would go to that much trouble to convert a 10-8 into a Model 13, unless they started with a bunch of parts and not a complete revolver. Maybe a factory mishap with stamping the model number into the frame? Not unheard of when it comes to S&W revolvers.

As Stan mentioned, likely a mis-stamped model 13-2 or 3. Only a letter of authenticity would tell what the revolver was called in their records when it was shipped:

Letters – Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation

Since a model 10-8 in .357 was never cataloged, it is less likely a one-off special and more likely a curious error.

What is the SN on the butt? That would at least give an approximate age range and rule out whether it is really a dash-8 or a miss-stamped earlier series.

The model 10s and 13s of that era were numbered in the same D prefix series, so again a mystery gun absent a letter.
