While at the big Phoenix show this past weekend I ran into a guy peddling this neat little Model 65-5. Couldn't resist.
It came with Pachmayr grips - I soon fixed that issue.

The 65 three inch is the perfect carry combat revolver. Mine went back to S&W for the “combat revolver package” which I highly recommend. It’s still being offered by S&W at $265. Mine had a worn finish and looks great bead blasted (IMO). The red ramp and polished hammer and trigger were done later. The package has been copied by my gunsmith on other revolvers.

My 65-3. 3 inch round butt k-frames make for a fine carry revolver.

While at my Cabelas today, I saw they had a bunch what appeared to be 3” k frame, both 65 & 64s. All were dirty with rubber grips and a lanyard ring off the butt. Salesman said they were “law agency” guns. I didn’t ask for clarification.

While tempted (mid 500-mid 600 range) I just spent a wad on my new chrono.

Perhaps later, if they still have them, I’ll take a closer look

My M65 has been lightly shot but has accompanied me many times while camping and walking through the woods. When in the woods, I load Buffalo Bore "Heavy" 180 grain LSWC-FN 357 Magnums. Basically as protection against 4 legged animals. That round should penetrate quite well even though expansion won't happen. Penetration on Bears and such is essential. Thankfully, even though I have run across a few Bears, I never needed to take action against one.

Mine has the full hammer spur but is still in pristine condition - what a great revolver!!

Cannot recall the dash number on mine, but it was in a batch being sold by CDNN about 20 years ago at $300. Word was they came from a corrections department somewhere.

Big mistake that day was not ordering a 3953 at the same price.:o

I don’t think they are going run out any time soon

I am sorry I missed the show. Made as far south as Prescott, but got tied up at the annual FBI NAA Christmas festivities.

How much your drop on that nice 65?

I am down to 2 65-5s.

$629 for the 65 and it has the lock

The 65-5 3" round butt is one my favorite revolvers. I have shot a ton of .38 Special through it, but rarely put .357 Magnum through it.

Three inch guns are a fetish of mine. I must have a dozen or more. One 65, two 64's, two 10's, a 686 Plus, and a Chief. That's just the Smiths.

When I found my 65-3 back in 2003, it had a 4 inch barrel and was really an abused revolver. The price was cheap. I sent it off to S&W for a rebuild. Three inch heavy barrel, factory DAO, all new innards, the timing adjusted and the revolver sighted in for 158 grain .357 loads.
It has given me over 20 years of satisfaction. Simply a superior carry piece.

I've said it before and will say it again, if I had to sell off all my guns this one would be the last one to go.
Everything you really need, nothing you don't, concealable, enough barrel to get good accuracy and velocity, eats anything from bunny toot 38's right up to dragon's breath 357 magnums.
What's not to love?

Do they have a package where they swap barrels for you? I’ve got a factory DAO 4” 64. I’d love to have it bead blasted and put 3” barrel on it
