NEW 629 and 686 NO LOCK MOUNTAIN GUNS ANNOUNCED!
Holy hell, Jason Cloessner at Lipsey's is on fire right now! These look incredible! Looks like they have actual non-Altamont wood grips and 4" one-piece barrels too! (I'd still like to see a return to the pre-lock frame shape on the 686, but otherwise there are magnificent additions to the catalog!)
EDIT: They just removed the post from their Facebook page. Guess the news dropped a little too early. Shot Show can't come quickly enough!
EDIT2: S&W just sent an email out on them! See the link below. They're also on the official S&W and Lipsey's sites now!
https://link.smith-wesson.com/q/7wkg...kklhQ3X_qM5MoJ
Edit 3: Lipsey's put out a video!
Edit 4: Another great new video with Jason Cloessner and Darryl Bolke!

I tried to upload a pic from the sight, but was unsuccessful.
The 629 Mtn looks great.

I'll be on these like white on rice! Is it actually happening? Is S&W actually listening to us? No lock and tapered ejector shrouds? Now how about a real production pass at the 617 MG...might as well make 627 8 shot too. Imagine Model 28 4" matte finish 8 shot. Lets hope the above is just eh beginning.

I saw the announcement from S&W this morning, and had to check their website to make sure! This is great news, and I hope they sell well and broaden the line. I already have a couple 629 mountain guns, but look forward to having a 686 version.

Heck, let's just redo the ENITRE Mountain gun lineup! .45 Colt, .44 Special, .45 ACP, .41 Magnum! What did I leave out?
As far as selling well, I have no need for another 629--but I am going to buy one any way.

Being a southerner, I have always believed we southerners held a superior knowledge of the world around us than our northeast counterparts in places like Massachusetts, on a general population overview. It appears I am correct, the move to East Tennessee by S&W and the added of those mountain hoogers to the construction facilities have caused S&W to develop what is know in the south as "common sense" They have reintroduced the mountain gun series without the hillary hole lock. Wow, what a fantastic way to recapture the handgun maket. I wonder if this common knowledge that filtered into the management was by osmoses of just being around this group of very knowledge southerners or the management was taken over by a bunch of mountain hoogers. Long live the mountains guns with no locks.!! ( No smith and wesson stock was harmed in the making of these no lock mountain guns in 2025).
I have been playing with these S&W wheel guns since the mid 1970s, and own several in my collection. The most two accurate guns I own and the ones I actually carry to the field are my two mountain guns in 357 and 44. They will be the last two I keep if I every sell the others and that includes my 29-2. I think they have hit the home run for the company with the change in management style in 2025.

Now we’re talking! Just got an email from Smith about these. I’ve been “needing” a 4 inch stainless 357. Guess the 686 mountain gun will be on my list. I’ll probably end up picking up a 629 as well, just because.

Don't know if a 22 can qualify as a mountain gun but I would really like a 617 with a slim barrel. The full lug barrel on mine is needlessly heavy for a 22.

Everybody, me included is doing backflips right now. But you stop and think about it…… how much money did S&W save by deleting the lock? It’s anybody’s guess. Let’s just pretend $20. That’s pure profit. Any way you look at it, deleting the lock was a good choice.
I think the value of the “Lock Models” just plummeted.
Smith is back in the game.
Is the contour of the frame on the N frame correct/ original. Looks like it to me. But I’ve been wrong before.

I’m happy to see this change, the 3 classics and these 2 mountain guns. Like others I’d like to see this trend continue to other mountain gun variants- both N & L frame, and other J and K frames.
I’d really like to see a remake of the 3”k frame……..M10/64, 13/65

What makes the last two unique is not only lack of the lock, but they haven’t made those models in years.
No way I am buying anything locked nowadays.
And what about the long standing “they can’t get out of the agreement?”
And “they are owned by a lock company, the lock is here to stay”

The Best is Coming in 2025
Oh no! I need the 41Rem Mag Mountain
Gun, I have the 44S&W Mag and 45Colt
already!
Looks like I’ll end up with another 44Mag
Mountain Gun and
a Česká zbrojovka (CZ) Colt Anaconda
45Colt this year.
Wait I got a S&W Email, they’re doing a
M.G. in 357S&W Mag too. I’ll get that
too!
This is Gun News!

Are you paying attention, Ruger/Marlin?
You want to sell a bunch of guns, while cutting costs? Delete that stupid cross bolt safety on the lever guns!
(While you’re at it, stop the atrocious checkering. Bleck!)

What is TGW bear hug grips? These revolvers look pretty nice. Gold bead front sight,my favorite. May have to get a 686 7 shot MG. Welcome back S&W!

Kudos to S&W. I enjoyed reading the many varied opinions of the 3 classics in the other thread. Still lots of whiners tho. Mim parts, sheesh can we get over it? These 2 mountain revolvers seem like clear winners.
Good to see S&W making themselves relevant in today’s revolver market.

I've never had a problem with mim parts
I'm also chomping at the bit for a 617 Mountain gun so will be holding my breath,
Already have pre lock 629 and 686 Mountain guns so will hold back so you guys can play catch up ( see how nice I am lol)
But if that 617 Mg shows up it's every man , woman and non binary unicorn for him (her, Zee) self. Wink.
Ps would also love a blue version of all the above if anyone at SW or Lipseys is reading this.

Tyler Gun Works. They're also providing grips for the new no-lock Model 10. While I'd like to see medallions in them, they already look leaps and bounds better than the too-thin Altamont laminate grips that have been on S&Ws for awhile.

The Grips don’t really matter. I’ll replace them
with the appropriate Synthetic Rubber Grips.
Once you touch off factory full loads, you’ll
either replace the Wood Grips or quit
shooting that Mountain Gun.
Don’t ask how I know.

You guys can thank Jason Cloessner at Lipsey’s and the team for making this stuff happen. I know a bunch of folks here will find a reason to be unhappy, but for our team, we are exceptionally happy with the relationship with Lipsey’s to bring great revolvers to market.
If you are at SHOT, come meet the team at Lipsey’s. We will be there all day on Tuesday talking about the new revolvers.

I've wanted a 357 Mountain Gun since they discontinued them, and I saw an article (with photo) about them! It'd take all + of my stash, but I'll be looking for one. Maybe the Msrp will not be the final price? I might even buy one sight unseen online, and hope Smith has done us proud with the build quality..

Wow, now're talking... they brought the non-IL stainless L-frames and N-frames back! These look very nice!!!!
Can't wait to see where they go from here. It is a great time to be a revolver enthusiast. My wallet will not be happy though.

This could really be a turning point for S&W. I will definitely be supporting them and their efforts by buying several. I especially like the 686MG.

At the last SWCA Symposium a nice young man from S & W attended and he heard loud and clear about what the other attendees would like to see for new product. The S & W UCs were in the pipeline then. Probably not a coincidence that these models have appeared.
Anyone besides the five SWCA members who've already posted here interested in joining?

Agreed so much. The crossbolt is dumb. Luckily there are companies that make replacement plugs that look just like another receiver screw with faux screw slots.
As for the checkering, I also agree. The 336 was meant as a utilitarian gun, not a glitzy luxury model. The checkering looks gaudy and no doubt adds cost for what should be (and isn’t) an affordable deering piece.

The new non lock MG hammer trigger appear to be flash chromed like they did in the dash 3 and older, they are probably still mim, older ones were forged, ( they were never stamped sheet metal) just have the chrome finish instead of case coloring.
I kinda like the look of flash chroming on a SS gun.

I hope someday we get to hear the full story from S&W about why it took so long to ditch the lock……
I am buying 3 new S&W’s this year at least - Classic Model 10 and both of these new mountain guns.
Great job Smith and Wesson - this is even better than when Winchester brought back the controlled round feed Model 70!

Wow, what a fantastic way to recapture the handgun maket.

Perhaps you should have asked someone from the northeast to proof read and edit your post. It’s hard to buy into your ideas with such grammatical errors.

If you are at SHOT, come meet the team at Lipsey’s. We will be there all day on Tuesday talking about the new revolvers.

Contact info for Jason so we can egg he and the team on?

I read the state approved list and California is not on it. Does anyone know if Lipsey's has plans to get these on California's list?
Hoping that we can get these. Since I'm starting to think the courts will never toss the roster.

I have wanted to see the 686 Mountain Gun return for years. Half lug L frames are the most practical mid size .357 revolvers ever made.
My only concern with this model is that it appears the gas ring has been deleted. This is also why I have avoided the new Model 19 and 66 revolvers. Beefing up the forcing cone and adding a ball detent lock up is really unnecessary on a .357 L frame.

In the video he talks about calibers in the "initial offering". Sure sounds like .45 colt and others may be on the way!

Great for lipseys to special order these with no lock and one piece barrel. Now I’m getting a 10 and a 686 this year. Maybe a 629. I really hope Tyler grips fit the frame just snug and perfect. They look to be nice and thick. I really hope they will do a fixed sight 357. A 681 plus in 3 inch would be so perfect.

I’m down with the 686 MG.
I couldn’t wait for a 3 inch 7 shot 681 so I had one made.
But, I would buy another if they made a 586 or 581 7 shot in 3 or 2.5.
