I do not know what to make of this. I have been carrying a 649 with ILS lately and a gun box installed in my work desk so I could leave it during the day for different reasons. Our agency smith wants all guns with ILS locked when stored.

I call S&W last week to purchase a couple of spare keys and I was told that they were out of stock. They told me that they will have more by the end of January.

Now I am assuming that this happened because of poor inventory control. I cannot believe that Smith would go back to the old ways.

More to think about is that dealers and distributor supplies are low with all the sales before the new President. If Smith did not keep a stock of keys for new production it could harm the company. Some may remember the issues with the factory transition from wood to rubber grips.

Maybe they'd have keys in stock if they didn't issue keys with no-lock revolvers. I just bought a new 442 no-lock which came with a set of keys. Hmmm...

True to my tradition, I shall offer my $.02 unsolicited. I understand that the whole thing is none of my business. That said, what business is it of your agency gunsmith whether you have locks on or off in storage? More important, it should be obvious that engaging the lock for storage in a locked box is not only useless, it is a fatal accident waiting to happen. And when it happens, it will happen to the poor sucker who was following the rules, not to the agency gunsmith.

I would not follow the rule, and I would seriously consider a blanket party for that arrogant a----le.

My sympathies for your situation.

This armorer fellow is so much of a neanderthal that I hardly know where to begin in expressing my disgust for his "directive."

A few years ago, one agency here in Missouri said that no alloy frame S&Ws were allowed as personal carry guns because only certain ones made after certain dates were approved for +P.

Since learning the dates or Model variations was too much trouble for the "range officer," no S&Ws with alloy frames were approved. That rule remained in effect even after S&W began stamping the +P on the caliber designation on the barrel.

The "reasoning" used by some of these LE types baffles the mind. It is really best if this agency gunsmith not try thinking on his own. If he does, he should not verbalize the results as it will take away any doubt about whether he is a stupid fool.
