Default 342 Vs. 340 SC

Other than the obvious that the 340 is a .357 Mag. is one more desirable than the other? I have a 342 (no lock). The local gun shop just got a used 340 in trade. They want $900 for it, I am frinds with the owner so will get it for less. Probably would only carry + P ammo in it. So as I asked is one more desirable than the other. Have a Model 19 2" also.

By seeing some of the posts on here, the 342 seems to be a pretty wanted item. I personally wouldnt mind one, but dont feel like spending the money theyre going for...

$900 in my mind is WAY too much for a 340, And if that is what they are going for, I will sell mine!
I seem to gravitate torward a 38 special and reserve the 340 for Mt Biking and trips into the inter workings of CC Phila,
Unless it's nearly a straight trade, I personally would not look at the 340.
I picked up my 340 for $400 with 10 rounds through it and straight from being magna ported,,,, That's why I didnt pass it up.
My 2 cents
Peter

Default Keep your 342...skip the 340.

A no-lock 342 is more desirable and much harder to find than a 340. And since you would only use .38 +P ammo anyway, there's absolutely no useful difference between the two--you're not missing anything by being limited to .38 Special. And finally, $900 for a USED 340? That's overpriced! Look through the completed auctions on GunBroker, and you'll find some brand-new 340's selling for as little as $700. Even brand-new 340's rarely hit the $900 mark, and when they do it's usually because they come with Crimson Trace grips that add about $200 to the price.

You already have the better gun. I'd pass on the 340.

Stick with the grass in your own yard and you'll be very happy in time...
YMMV?

Thanks for the replies. I had pretty much decided to keep my 342 and pass on the 340. But I was curious as to what folks thought. Just confirmed what I was thinking.

Thanks,
AJ

I bought a 342PD (with the IL) a few months ago on this forum. It's from the Bangers special run which came with Ahrends cocobolo grips and the high vis sights. The seller also included a set of CT LG-205's for $650. A pretty fair deal I'd say. Noticably lighter than my 642-1, it's been on my hip almost every day since it arrived. GREAT carry gun! Definitely a bit snappy with 38+P's though.

Then stopped by one of my favorite gun shops a couple days ago and, lo and behold, a near mint 342PD, WITHOUT THE LOCK, was staring me in the face.... $529 + tax on consignment, box and all "stuff" intact. Tried to get him down to no avail.....actually left the shop, drove around the block and went back in with CC in hand. I knew if I didn't buy it it would be gone and I'd be kickin' myself!

So, now my IL model will likely be up for sale/trade...

That's a GREAT price! A couple weeks ago a NIB version of the same gun sold for over a thousand dollars on GunBroker.
