Default 500 s&w

I got a 500-8 3/8 barrel a couple weeks ago, to go along with my 44 mag (which I have never fired) and decided it was time to let loose. I loaded up with Hornaday and MagTech ammo from various places and off I went, (POOR, after the ammo purchases). I must admit, I am not by no means a gun expert, but, in my opinion the 500 is all that I expected, but not as bad as I feared! If that makes sense? I had freinds with me, along with thier toys, Kimbers-Colts- Rugers, but the BIG 500 was the star of the show and the best supporting award went to the 44.......

My main reason for avoiding the 500! They are a blast to shoot though (no pun intended). The .44 mag is great.. I can't believe you hadn't fired it yet!

What model .44?

Default 500

Oh the .500 will get you reloading....lol in fact so will the .44 or at least wanting too
and yes it's not really that bad recoil wise as everyone says it is,,,, it's stout but nothing that can't be managed...not to mention the giggle factor after letting loose a round..
also the .500 can be wonderfully accurate too..

You need to reload, I load a 350 grain JHP load for my for my 500 for about 70 cents a round. Of course loading for the 44 will make your money go a little further too.

I load some pretty hot 44 round for hog hunting but the mild load for the 500 just makes it look like you comparing a 357 to a 22 lr load. The 500 has suffered a bunch of what I call, bad press; youtube and other websites are full of people shooting the thing with a poor grip and such and the results often end up with someone shaking the hand, getting knocked in the forhead, cussing, and other shooting habit results. I have shot big bores for many years and was mildly surprised that the hype was worse than the bite after reading the specs of the 500 round(very impressive). Caution goes to all though, like any other gun, proper grip, stance, correct ammo, and BACKSTOP will determine a good from a bad day at the range.

Default 44 model 29

I always liked the "Dirty Harry" style... not crazy about the wood grips. I have large hands and would like to look into some different styles of grips. Now the 500 is right up my alley, grip wise..

Default Re-loads

I just started shooting larger calibers, 44-500 . Re-Loading will be in my future.... I buy what the stores have in stock, ammo wise. Hornaday, Cor-Bon and MagTech are what I`m finding on the shelves around Atlanta. Cor-Bon are the "special" loads, a
lot cheaper, but not the BANG, I do seem to like. Expensive thats for sure!!! I like it and so I am willing to pay the price, sad but true......... Anybody got a 460? Cheaper ammo and a variety of calibers 45-454-460 for shooting. I got to get a 2nd job......

I hope you are saving all your brass. They will be like little gold nuggets when you start reloading.

I have the 460 and am really enjoying it. I have put about 300rds through it so far. Half of those my own reloads. Had to start reloading as much as I am shooting it. Shooting 454 or 45long out of it is like plinking with a .22lr. I just loaded some mild loads with AA5744 and am going to try them tonight. I hope they feel like the 454.

I am trying to get as much practice on it before October because I plan on taking a deer with it this year.

I just mounted an Aimpoint red dot on it, I will take some pics for you all tonight.

It is amazing how accurate the large revolvers are.

I hope you have better luck with the 5744 than I did. I just GAVE AWAY 2lbs of the stuff. I was blowing cases apart with the powder. They were separating about 1/2 inch up from the rim. I used the data from AA's site. I tried light to heavy and everywhere in between. They didn't all separate, but after losing 12-14 very expensive cases, I quit. I've been using cases full of Trail Boss, 2400 and H-110 in the same batch of cases without any problems.

Good luck

I have been using Ramshot enforcer for my loads so far. It was the only powder I could find that would work for the 460 when I started reloading. The 39gr enforcer with Hornady 240grxtp felt like the Winchester low recoil round. A lot more tame than the Hornady factory load with their 200gr SST. Accuracy is about the same, I think I am the biggest problem with accuracy considering this is my first large caliber pistol, but I am getting better. I hope to do much better now that I have the red dot sight.

I will let you know if I have any luck with the AA5744. I only got a pound of it, so if it does not work I wont be out that much. I do have 4lbs of the Enforcer which works well I guess. Its the only powder I have ever used

Default 460

I looked at a Performance Center 460 here in Atlanta and it was around $1300 (new) and they had a used one for $850 not PC, just the 460XVR. I am enjoying the 500 and can`t wait to try my hand at the 460.
