Question Grip frame size - 460/500 vs. 29/629

Does anyone know for sure if the grip frame on the 460/500 series is wider front-to-back than the 29/629 grip frame, or are they identical with only a different rubber grip?

Thanks for any info,

Myron

Myron - I have a 329 Night Guard, N- frame and ordered the Smith & Wesson factory Hogue grips that are made for the X- frame 460 /500 frames. The Hogue grips fit my N frame / 329 perfectly. I believe they are identical but you could call the customer service department to be positivly sure.

Rangerpat -

Thanks -
I also have put the 500 grips on my Mountain Gun and they seemed to fit OK except there is a void space between the back of the grip frame and the interior of the grip, about 1/8" or so.
I'm wondering if it would be better to add a soft elastic filler strip in this void space or leave it empty. I tried some foam weatherstripping but it doesn't spring back to shape very fast.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but it was my impression that the 460/500 had the smaller K/L frame size grips and of course the 29/629 are the N-frame grips and are larger.

diamondback68 -

I don't see how they could use the K/L grip frame because the grips from the 500 fit the 29/629 series with room left over.
What I was really getting at, I guess, does the frame on the 500 fill the grip completely, or is the void space there on the 500 also?

I also have put the 500 grips on my Mountain Gun ...
I have the same x-frame grip on my 3" N-frame Bounty Hunter Custom, fits perfectly, no gap.

Yep, that's what I have on my 329 - what postban linked to... it has a filler that is internal and it helps to absorb recoil to the webbing between your thumb and forefinger. There is no exposed back strap of the grip frame.

The 460/500's have the exact same grip frame as the K/L frames do. The rubber "X" grip that everyone always refers others to, is designed to work on all of these frames. I haven't looked lately, but it used to be posted on Smith's website even.

When you go to wood, then you will need to use K/L stocks.

postban and Rangerpat -
Thanks so much for the info. I had purchased an orange X-frame (emergency survival kit) grip from a guy on the forum, and it has a distinct space between the frame and the grip. Since that, I also picked up a couple of new black X-frame grips from a fleabay dealer. The black grips fit perfectly with no gap. I haven't figured out exactly what the difference is between the orange and the black grips, but there is a distinct difference in the fit-up. Visual comparison looks the same until you put it on the gun.

Gun 4 Fun -
If the X-frame grip frame is the same as a K/L frame, why do the grips fit a round-butt N-frame? I don't own a K or L frame gun to look at, but I would assume (probably wrongly) that their grip frames are smaller than the N-frame or are they all the same? Not trying to argue the point, but I am curious.

Gun 4 Fun is correct. The X-frame grip frame is the same as the K/L-frame grip frame. The N-frame grip frame is larger.

The Hogue rubber X-frame grip fits the K/L and N-frame because the covered backstrap conceals the void.

The N round butt, is a lot closer in size to the K/L round butt, then the square butt versions are with each other. I don't know why, but them's the facts.

I guess I'm starting to get the picture.

ol timer -
If the void applies to X/K/L frames, then they were intentionally designed with the gap. Maybe the void space accounts for the cushioning effect.

Gun 4 Fun -
The round N-frame fills up the gap on the black version of the X-frame grips that I have, but not the orange one. The only thing I can figure out is that there is a part of the padding missing, but there is a gap at the top of the grip also, and the cushion is present and accounted for in that location. 'Tis a puzzlement!

Thanks for all the replies and info! I don't post much, but read a lot. Figure I can learn more by reading than by running my mouth (fingers). I never have quite understood the importance some folks put in post counts.
edit: sounded like I was slamming post counts - not so, just that a few make it sound like the all-important factor.

Myron

As far as I know, the X-frame Hogue monogrips are still available only via S&W Accessories - for $37 + s/h. For what they do to my 4" & 6" 629s in .44 Magnum recoil, they are a bargain. Asked sometime back if they'd fit the K/L frame, I tried them on my 296:

Yeah, it really tames that nasty AirLite Ti's bare backstrap 'slap', albeit taking it from the 'pocket protector' status it enjoyed with the OEM minimalist boots. It fits on my 2" 10 - and really looks crazy. No gaps, tight fit.

Yes, from S&W directly. They fit right on my M29, seriously better than the poo Pachmayers it came with.

Product: Model 500 Impact Absorbing Hogue Square Butt Conversion Grips

They also have yellow and orange

K, L and X share grips and N is unique, as is J.
