Was it much trouble to change them out ? Does the SDM sight have a flat top which approaches a patridge sight appearance?
Thanks !!!

To do it right, you need a cup tip punch and a drill press.
Since I don't have a drill press, I had my gunsmith do it.
The sights are flat topped and look like this:
Super Sights
Now, since you didn't say which gun you have, you should be aware that some of the new sights can be switched out by hand. Look for the hole in the front of the sight base. Be sure what you have before you order.

Milton - thank you for your service to our country!!! If your front sight is pinned, then you will have to drill the SDM to fit. Yes to a flat top and I recommend the green fiber optic over the red one. Much easier on the eyes. The red one tends to balloon up.

Thanks all ! The revolver is a 686-5,5 inch with a v-notch rear and a round top Hi-Viz front.I do not like the round top front sight and was looking for a sight that was like the hi-viz but had a flat top sort of like a standard patridge blade.
I agree the green one looks best and I will probably try it ,I have shot the red one on a friends 1911 and like the size of the "dot" better than the Hi-Viz.
I also plan on changing the rear sight to a standard notch.

Like this? I replaced the V notch with a square blade as well.
ETA: My revolver had a roll pin holding the sight. No cup tip punch required.

I bought the revolver to use for ICORE and steel. I had it cut for moons and put a 7 pound DA trigger on it and shot it for a season with the factory HiViz and V notch. I found that set to be very fast on the close targets, but I never mastered precise line up of them. I was losing a lot of points in ICORE at any sort of distance. I swapped them out for the SDM and square notch and am pretty pleased. The only thing I would like better is if the FO was only .040 diameter. In bright conditions, the .080 fiber will "flare" (to my eyes anyway) and make it difficult to see the square top edge of the SDM. Sometimes it's bad enough that I have to put some sight black or marker on the tube and limit the amount of light pick up. I am considering swapping it out for a gold bead.

That is part of my problem,I can also shoot fast at close targets but I have shot with patridge sights SO long I just can't correct the front sight position with the v-notch and the larger Hi-Viz.You say you are getting flare of the fiber,I wonder if you could cover small increments of the upper surface of the "pipe" if that would help?

It does help, sight black or magic marker both limit light pick up by the tube. The problem is, on overcast days you want the tube to pick up all the light you can get. So it is pretty much a guessing game. That is why I'm considering going to a gold bead. Consistency.
But sights are very personal... You may not have any issue with flare at all.

The SDM's are one of the few that have,
A. A long enough light pipe to gather a lot of light.
And
B. A square top duplicating a patridge blades top edge.
But because of that long light pipe, it's a bit fragile (lot's of exposed plastic rod to get banged). And it moves lot's of light because of it. The lighting "flare" aspect can be controlled with thin strips of electrical tape applied to the light gathering rod's surface to cutdown light transmission.
