Good SC gunsmith?
I need to find a good gunsmith in the Greenville-Spartanburg area of SC to install a new cylinder stop spring on my 629. Any of you guys in the Upstate know a smith who is competent to work on S&W revolvers?

Came up nothing in Columbia area. I had approached a few "smiths" in the area before about some work and was underwhelmed at their expertise. Decided to do the work myself and so far, I have been able to fix/modify any firearm I have. I've also had friends give me tasks to perform. So far....success. Maybe you should give it a shot yourself? You may suprise yourself!

I second the idea of replacing the spring yourself. It's an easy job. Since the most common mishap when replacing that spring is losing control of it and having it fly across the shop, it's a good idea to do spring installation inside a 2 gallon Zip-Loc bag to contain things.

I agree with Haggis. Do it inside a bag with good light overhead. Get a really small flat bladed screw driver with a very thin blade to push it into place. It should not take over a half hour including dis-assembly and re-assembly. It will be three weeks for a gunsmith.

I'd be willing to try it if I had some good illustrated disassembly and reassembly instructions. Anyone know of any on the Internet?

Look in the FAQs - the first topic in this section of the board. Scroll about half way down or search for "detail strip". These are good instructions.
