Default Trigger stays back after pulling it in DA

My newly purchased S&W 15 trigger gets stuck all the way to the back of the frame occasionally after pulling it in DA. The hammer goes down fine.

I have to cock the hammer to reset it. It will work ok for a couple of times, then it does it again.

Any help on the cause, and the fix, would be much appreciated.

Sounds like the hand is too thick and is binding in the ratchets. Best way to check is to pull the trigger DA with the cylinder open. Either a narrower hand or adjusting the offending ratchets is the fix.

I think that 'KAC' has it pin pointed, but I would like to add the possibility that the ratchets have rubbed the recoil plate hard enough to brad over the lower edge of the hand window thereby causing the hand to stick in the fully extended position. Brownell's has a neat dedicated 'hand window' file that will take care of that problem with just a few strokes. ..... Big Cholla

Default Clean thouorghly

I've posted this before, and I'm going to post it again. And, I'll probably do it again.

If you have any problems with a S&W, BEFORE you doing any work on it, it needs to be cleaned inside and out thouorghly, then if the problem persists, then go for the fix - whatever that might be.

Hope this helps,
chris

I tested the trigger again, and observed that it hangs up every time on the sixth trigger pull. I suspect that the hand is too fat for that particular cylinder notch/ratchet. Good call, KAC!

While I've opened up other S&W's before, I hesitate to crack open the side plate on this one, as it's it like new, to clean and oil it. I don't want to mung the screw heads. I'll take it back to the gun shop where I purchased it, and have the gunsmith check it out. Thanks!

I bought one like that a while back. After cleaning and replacing the RB spring it never had another issue.

Put a little grease (WHITE) on the extractor and shoot everyone on TV a night or two and it will be OK.

Now that's a unique solution.....how about just everyone that appears in a political ad? might help with your stress level as well...

Won't shooting people on TV lead to actual anti-social violent acts?::

I don't know about that, but it sure makes the duck in the painting on my far wall get nervous.

Don't go filing on the gun till you are sure of the problem. Most likely a cleaning or break-in problem. If in doubt, send it to S&W, if it is new, it will be on their dime.

+1. Never file on the hand frame window. To fix one ratchet (even if one ratchet were the issue, which I doubt) by filing on the frame window, you loosen the other five, and can only hope to have future luck to find a wide enough replacement hand, down the road. Always work on the part that's most easily replaced, and only after taking all the other non-invasive possibilities known to man. Worst case, you'd send it to a competent gunsmith to file a single ratchet.
