guys i have a new rear sight.it came off my 586 L frame.
what will this site fit on a n frame. i had a guy try it on a 629 and it would not fit.
will this sight fit any n frame that shoots the 38,357 round,is it because the 44 mag cylinder is longer that this sight wil not fit the bigger n frames/
will it fit any newer k frames , i know it wont fit the 66 2 1/2 inch but will fit the 66 4 and 6 inch

thanks for any advice guys.

S&W has tinkered with the sight leaf on the target sighted guns on numerous occasions. This means that not only the frame size comes into account, so was the production era of the gun.

Now, one exception to this is with the revolvers built since S&W started to drill and tap the frames for a mounting rail in 1993. When this was instituted the sight leaf was changed from a flat front edge to a half round at the front that fit into a machined recess in the top strap, in addition the sight leaf became a bit shorter in overall length. On K, L, and N frames produced to the new standard, the sight assembly is that same for every model.

To put it simply, if the front edge is squared off, you'll need to know the date when it was made, once you know that I believe you'll find that it will fit any K or L frame made during the same period.

SCOOTER,I HAVE A 586 NO DASH GUN.ANF THAT FITS AND MODEL 586 OR 686..WILL THAT SIGHT FIt any early model 27-2 or 28 or any n frame fro the 670;s that shot th e 38/357
i know the 44 mag cylinder makes the frame to big,but the smaller na frame cylinder calls o smaller sight??the size of the cylinder dictates the size of the sight??
what do you think
my sight is squared off

You need to remember that the frame window for the N frame is longer then a K or L frame and the older squared off sights had the front edge placed in the area of the barrel mounting boss. As a consequence I believe that the mounting leaf for the N frame sights is longer than on the K or L frames. In addition, over the years S&W has changed the position of the hole for mounting the sight and probably the size of the screw used.

Bottomline, I do not think your sight will fit a model 27 or 28, however the only way to be sure would be to try it. The simple truth is that S&W has been refining the design features of it's revolvers for over 100 years and part of that process is that details like this have changed more times than I would even guess at.
