Default Care of S&W grips and whats the best way to fit grips

Is there anything I can put on my S&W Target grips to protect them and polish them. Also I have a set of S&W Target grips with silver washer. After you put them on the pistol and tighten the screw, there is a small gap by the trigger guard. What is the best way to get the gap out.

Soap, water, a clean cloth and a toothbrush for the checkering will clean them. I dry them thoroughly. Once dry, I use Renaissance Wax to polish them. I find it works very well. Some use Johnson Wax with good results as well.
