Was in a LGS today checking out some stuff, came across a good looking 13-2, open it up, do the standard inspection, look at the forcing cone and it's cracked! I finish my inspection, everything else is fine, so I tell the guy about it, point it out to him, and his face turns red. He calls his gunsmith out to take a look at it, and he concurs with me that it's cracked and he takes it back to his work area. The salesman asks if there is anything else I want to look at. I ask him, what is he going to do with it, he says probably replace the barrel and sell it. I ask him what he would take for it as-is, he throws out $150. I take it, $150 OTD.

I found a replacement pinned barrel on gunbroker for $50 and plan on doing it myself.

Obviously wont have much collector value, but possible refinish down the road would give me a pretty nice gun for under $500, or at the very least a shooter grade model 13 for right at $200!

How did I do?

This is the first one I have seen "in the flesh" with this issue, and honestly I am shocked it made it to the sales floor in that condition, obviously I think it was an honest mistake, but has anyone else come across a situation like this? Imagine the liability if someone fired it and it had issues?

I dont want to drag out my gear to do a single pic of the forcing cone, but let me see how good I can get with my phone.

Not the best photos, but you can clearly see the crack at the 6 o'clock position.

If you have the tools, knowledge and skills, go for it. If the job turns out OK then the $200 bucks you spent on the gun/bbl. will be well worth it. If you bend the frame or crack it, then it was a lousy investment. I will do all my own Gunsmithing EXCEPT for barrel changing. If I saw the crack upon inspection I would pass on the gun. If the forcing cone has cracked it is a good indication that the gun has has a fair amount of light weight Magnums through it and I personally would have taken a pass on it.

Now that you own it, you might as well do the best you can with it. Good luck and let us know how you make out. If the gun turns out OK, I would stick to .38 Special and occasional mild Magnum 158 grain ammo.
