I am completing my project 38 DA 3rd model rebuild and am having a problem with my hammer rear sear engagement. When I pull back on the hammer the rear sear is not locking on the hammer notch just below the stirrup. The sear seams sharp and the hammer notch looks ok. The rear sear spring is acting fine and seems to apply good effective pressure on the rear sear.. Can any of you advise me on the best way to fix this issue. I have several sears and sear springs in my parts bin and all react the same with none curing the problem. Is filing the hammer notch a possible solution or am I missing something? or is the D/A only double action with no cocking of the hammer for single action ?Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

Thanks Bullstone

DA ONLY SEAR PROBLEM

What is the model number of your firearm. Not knowing the model number I will venture to say if it is a DA only firearm the hammer will not lock in the cocked single action position. When you pull the trigger in a DA only revolver the hammer goes back to a predeteremined position and then releases.
As an example my 640 internal hammer does not lock. It goes back and then it releases from the sear. Their is no reason for it to lock.

I hope my answer is helpful!

TRIPACER: Thanks for the reply ,the model is the S&W 38 DOUBLE ACTION 38 S&W CALIBER 3RD MODEL manufactured 1884 thru 1895.
Hope this information will lead to answer.
Thanks Bullstone

Bull, your pictures of the hammer and sears were a terrific help to me. I'm restoring a 38DA with a lot of missing parts. After viewing your parts, I was able to determine that I had been sold the wrong hammer. It would not go into either half or full cock. After much consideration, I moved the both notch's with sucess. This 38DA will now operate in both single and double action with ease.
