K & L frame hammers are not interchangable are they?

Several years ago I installed a .5" case hardened target hammer on a 686-3 and now I want to sell the gun. If the hammer will fit a K frame I will put the original stainless hammer back on it and keep the L frame target hammer.

I believe the L frame hammer is taller to account for the taller frame. I do not believe that the L frame and the K frame use the same hammer.

You are right the L hammer is a bit bigger but not so much that is is easily identifiable unless you lay one next to a K hammer. I had a K hammer fall into a box of L target hammers once and it gave me fits for a couple of minutes until I realized what was going on.

Although rck281 pulled his erroneous reply, since he challenged my statement, and since I do not want someone relying on the wrong advice, I thought I would look it up and post a picture of an L Frame hammer in a K Frame gun just to be sure.

My answer was, of course, based upon the era of revolvers about which you asked, not the hammers for frame mounted firing pins as I am not sure about those.

"A picture is worth a thousand words."
