Hey guys, I've read a number of posts on the forum where guys recommend Flitz for bringing out the shine in blued revolvers but they don't specify which Flitz product they're using. There's two products: Flitz Rifle/ Gun Wax that in addition to providing a carnuba/beeswax shine also removes and prevents rust and then there is Flitz Metal Polish, which is more aggressive and is stated to not have any abrasives in it (but I'm not sure about that). So which products do you guys use on your new blued revolvers AND your old blued revolvers? Or do you use both products - polish then wax? Thanks for your replies!

Yes, there is some variance of opinion on this. Personally, I strongly do not recommend you use Flitz Metal Polish on a blued gun unless you wish to thin or strip the blue.

Yes, it'll make your blued gun shine due to the removal of mild oxidation and the presence of waxes and fillers. This is literally an optical illusion; the wax refracts light and bounces it back making the blue look shiny and new, even though it's been thinned.

Not worth the harm to the finish if you ask me, no matter how pretty it looks (until it wears off and has to be done again at further cost to the bluing).

I also don't recommend it for stainless unless you like the high mirror polish look.

Despite the advertising, Flitz polish does have abrasives in it, that's what makes it a polish; they're just mild compared to other compounds, but they're there.

Haven't used the Flitz Rifle/Gun Wax, but that sounds non-abrasive. On the other hand, don't hear it mentioned around here either. Renwax seems to get the nod among shooters who like to wax their guns.

Yes, Flitz is a compound and it removes layers. I don't know what you need exactly but I know you don't need to buff your blueing away.

I wouldnt use regular Flitz on a high polish blue. On a regular blue, very lightly polishing with regular Flitz will remove any light rust that sometimes is found on new bluing. Regular Flitz will remove cold blue and the chemical case hardened look finishes. I would try it somewhere it doesnt show first on any blued finish. Regular Flitz will chemically remove rust but the pits will remain. There is a very small amount of grit in it so hard rubbing will polish a surface.

The Flitz Gun Wax is pure wax and wont hurt anything.

Many years ago I used to buy police trade in model 10's when you could get them for well under a hundred dollars.I had a deal worked out with my LGS to have them re blued for only $50.00 if I did all the polishing and degreasing prior to going into the tank.I used the original strength Flitz ( different today ) to pre polish. Some guns would loose a lot of their blueing ,while others came out with a deep shine with no missing blue.I would be very careful in using this unless I was planing a refinish.

Thanks for all the in-depth inputs. I think I'll stick to the wax if I use anything.

Hapworth hit the nail on the head IMHO. I'd simply shine it up with a brand new clean and dry Microfiber Cloth and use Renwax. It will give the best shine without any risk to the blued finish.

I too agree with Hap that even though Flitz says no abrasives, I do believe there ARE fine ones in there and will remove bluing - not worth the risk to me.

By the way I LOVE Flitz blue polish in the tube and use it all the time - just NOT on Blued guns.
