Default Which extractor rod tool is best

I have incoming extractor rods for my 686-4 and 629-1.

Which extractor tool is preferred of the two listed?

Your product links are a little hard to decipher, but this tool from Brownells would be my choice.

That said, the piece of scrap wood with a hole slightly larger than my J-frame extractor rod and with a saw cut to allow it to be squeezed around the rod by my vice is the no cost option that serves my purposes very well.

Other than being wood, rectangular, and using the vice instead of a screw to tighten the grip, it is pretty similar to the Brownells tool.

Oh, and it is worth mentioning that with a wooden tool, you can grip any part of the rod, including the knurled section, with marring anything.

IMHO there is no real reason to waste your money on any ejector Rod tool! A Drill Press Chuck (or even a descent hand held Drill Chuck) works just as well or even better. They have very fine threads and are not be difficult to take apart. Remember to insert empties into the cylinder charge holes and never put any tool or chuck on the knurled portion (tip) of the ER. After the mid 50's the threads are left handed instead of right handed. Before spending money on tools that are really unnecessary, try the Drill Press / Chuck method - it's been working for me for 36 years and always does a perfect non marring job.

NOTE: Drill Press and or hand held Drill do NOT get used under power - strictly by hand only!

Not having a drill press--I got the Brownell's tool. The one I have is natural aluminum with knurled edge. Before that I just used a small vise with leather jaw inserts.

Both get the job done.

I use and like Power Custom's Extractor Rod Tool. It works on Smith & Wesson K, L, N, and J frames as well as the Ruger Security Six.

I have and have used the Brownell's version with good luck.

Not having a home shop I found it worked well and did a good job of tightening the rod on my K frames. And like Chief38 said make sure you fill the cylinders with empties.
