Suddenly I can't bring the trigger guard up to reassemble the pistol. Without the barrel assembly in place the trigger guard goes up fine but with the barrel assembly in place the bracket on the barrel assembly is blocking the device that holds it in place from closing. I've been using the pistol for the last two months without incident and now I can't get it back together. Is there an authorized gunsmith in the San Francisco bay area and if not what course of action should I take?

Make sure you have the base of the barrel inserted and positioned properly, and that the surfaces are clean. Even a small piece of debris can cause problems.

The foot of the barrel has to be all the way forward in the base of the slot, then the t. guard lever rotated closed.

Yes - as armorer states above, the barrel must be in the forward position (you will see a space from underneath of about 1/8") and the trigger guard should then snap into position.

Tried that without success, even with the barrel fully forward the trigger guard comes to a hard stop after about a quarter inch of movement. I think the locking mechanism is hitting the bottom or the top of the barrel assembly plate instead of the notch even though the barrel assembly is properly mounted. I have thought of using a bit of graphite on the front edge of the locking mechanism to see where it marks the barrel assembly plate but I'm leaving in about thirty minutes and will be swinging by a recommended gunsmith in the SF bay area(Imbert & Smithers in San Carlos) and let a professional examine it. I'll post back when I get home later today. Thanks!

A preliminary examination at Imbert and Smithers verified that there is indeed some sort of a problem preventing assembly. The boss was out but they were going to have him look at it when he gets back. If necessary they will send it to Smith and Wesson for repair. Of note I thought that only a gun dealer could send a gun through the mail but I was told that gunsmithing is an exception to that rule. I'd rather have them do it anyway if that proves to be necessary. I'll update this thread when I know more. Thanks.
