Bought one of the first 640Pros to hit the market in 2012. Best J frame Smith ever built! Haven't fired over 150 magnum rounds through it but probably 1,000 38s.

On the left side of the frame underneath the cylinder release slide the hammer stud is .003-005 recessed from being flush with the frame. Never noticed this until a couple of months ago. Have fired magnums and 38s in the weapon since noticing this aberration.

Not sure what to do. Gun has a good action and is very accurate.

Should I send it back to Smith for repressing the hammer stud back to flush with the frame or just keep running it. This is one of three weapons I use for concealed carry.

Appreciate your input!

First, it probably isn't that deep unless you have been able to measure it.

Second, the hammer stud is supported on the right end by the sideplate, at least it is supposed to be! It cannot move more than a few thousandths before it will be stopped by the sideplate. Unless the stud is loose in the frame (Does it wiggle when the action is disassembled?) don't worry about it

Thanks ALK8944:the hammer stud does not wiggle, and after examining the hammer stud again it appears to be more like .002-.003. In running the action the pull through on the trigger is smooth and no stacking.

Forgot about the sideplate being the second anchor point! I'm going to shoot it, and continue to enjoy it!

No! Don't accept this aberration! IMHO, It is a failure to function waiting to happen. The reason you didn't notice it before is because the stud had not broken free from the 'press in' position. Call S&W, get a mail chit and get it returned to the original position and condition. The M 640 is too good of a self defense handgun to allow it to not be in 100% condition. .....

I'm with Big Cholla. Send it back. The stud may not wiggle yet but it's loose and has shifted. It will only get worse.

Send it back to S&W.
