Can anyone recommend a good set of gunsmithing screwdrivers? I want to use the proper tools so I don't bugger the screws or mess something else up when working on a gun.

Well, after 50 years of working on guns, I settled on Wheeler Engineering's 'Big' set. I do like Chapman's bits, especially the Allen Wrenches. Brownell's older fixed blades are ground wrong. I have not tried Brownell's newer multi-bit sets. IF you do a lot of gun work, at times it behooves you to learn how to hand grind a screwdriver bit to your needs. ...........

..... for Reed and Prince (aka 'Phillips') I do use Wheeler bits.....

Be careful here, R&P are not the same as Phillips. Biggest difference is the tip; Phillips is fairly blunt while R&P comes to a sharp point. The blade widths are also different and I think the angle is, too.

A lot of metric stuff is R&P and using a Phillips will bugger the head.

Right on. A lesson taught in proper tools for the job in the Navy.

You can "get by" with Chapman and Wheeler, but if you want a quality tool set for gun work, go with Brownell. Like many of us, I should have purchased Brownell in the beginning.

A Snap-On screwdriver for adjusting ignition points in distributors (remember those?) I bought as part of a tool set in 1969 or 1970, is hollow ground and perfectly fits the sideplate screws on S&W's. A Swiss-made screwdriver made for the little screws in eyeglass frames, given to me by my optometrist when I found out I liked S&W's, is hollow ground and fits the forward screw on their adjustable sights. That's all I used for years.

I bought a set of Brownells a good while ago and like them a lot. They make or sell bits sized to fit about anything. The last bit I bought is for the grip screw bushings on Colt 1911's. I'll never mess one of those up again!

I've had the Chapman set for years, and really like it, but I came in to a little unexpected, unencumbered cash and just ordered the Brownell's 22 bit starter set. Looking forward to receiving it . . .

Brownell's aren't the cheapest game in town, but like Snap-On, they are high quality and designed for a life time of use. I'm sure you'll be pleased.... and hooked. ;)

Another good thing about the Brownells tools and their other fine products....they come with a "no questions asked" satisfaction guarantee.

From the Brownells website.......

" Our Promise To Our Customers: Your satisfaction is GUARANTEED - Period. If you aren’t completely, 100% satisfied with any item you purchased from us for any reason return it for a full refund or exchange.

We Guarantee Your Satisfaction 100%-Forever!"
