My project gun is almost complete. One problem is the front sight ,The original was dovetailed and silver soldered. It is now cut bask to a carbine length and i have to reinstall the front sight . Beings that i will make the sight ,do i dovetail the barrel or contour the sight and silver solder it on.The barrel wall is thick enough to accept the dovetail without wreaking it .Need some advise on what way to go
If you dovetail it, you can move it or replace it to sight in, and if damaged it's easy to replace.
Down side is, do you have the capability to cut a nice dovetail?
If you silver braze it, it's going to be stronger but it's not easy to replace, and the 1100 degree heat will destroy any finish on the barrel.
