My 40 year Go-to Gun Oil has been discontinued - at least in the 4.5 ounce dripper oil can. Anyone who has read my threads knows I am a HUGE Rig product fan and have used it almost exclusively over the years. Recently I depleted 140 of the gross (144 ) of cans I purchased several years ago. Some of them were given to shooting Bud's who now use the stuff as well. When I went to purchase another gross, I could not find it anywhere, (as in Midway, Mid South, Brownells, etc.) A quick call to Birchwood Casey confirmed my worries that it has been discontinued. They are still producing the Rig #2 Oil in the aerosol spray can however I am not an aerosol fan in general. Too much over spray, airborne product and less control of application is what I do not like about them. I guess their sales lacked in the 4.5 oz. can. Anyway, I did manage to score a dozen or so cans from some small local guys but they are now out of it too!

Rig is a marvelous gun product line that never got the notoriety it deserves. Rig started out as an independent products Company a long time ago and back in the late 70's I believe was sold to Silencio. Silencio sold their main business (hearing protection) and then the Rig Division was sold to Birchwood-Casey. B-C has been selling their products since, however IMHO they never gave the Rig line-up any promotions, advertisements, publicity etc. and just let the product dwindle on the vine! Many people only thought their only product was Rig Universal Gun Grease (which is incredible in its own right BTW) but their other products were winners as well!!

WHY I LIKE THE RIG #2 OIL SOOOOO MUCH

* It is a single use product for cleaning, lubrication and rust prevention. While admittedly there are more aggressive cleaners, unless a firearm is filthy, dirty and neglected the Rig #2 works just fine. It is a very thin liquid much like Remoil that evaporates after application and leaves protection and lubrication behind. Rig is clear and will not stain your holsters, clothing or hands.

* Because the product's carrier evaporates, it can safely be used inside of revolvers, Auto's, and any other mechanical tool or devise that needs lubrication AND will never attract dust, unburnt powder, grit, clothing fibers etc. Nothing worse than opening up a firearm to find a greasy, gritty mess inside due to an Oil or product that is a dust and dirt magnet!

* Rig #2 Oil has no Ammonia, Acetone or harsh chemicals that will eat modern firearm finishes, stocks, plastics and Polymers. Rig #2 Oil can be use pretty much anywhere with only excellent results and no ill effects. Just before heading out on a Pheasant Hunt or a Sporting Clay or Trap shoot I will wipe down my Shotgun's metal with a 100% cotton Flannel Rag treated with the Rig#2. It protects it from rain, wet Fields, snow & moisture without leaving the gun all oily and greasy.

* Last but not least, it actually smells good and my Wife doesn't complain! Heck, she doesn't even know I am using it unless she wonders into the Man Cave. Well at least they still make the Aerosol can and I do have a few dozen 4.5 oz. cans here now (after yesterday's score). This should last me a year or two but HOPE they start up production once again. If you are a Rig #2 Oil user, please call or write Birchwood Casey Products and give them "the business"!

Judging from Remoil Sales, I guess the gun public just likes aerosol cans better than dripper cans since the Remoil is all but impossible to find in large bottles as well. I've seen the bottles here and there, once in a while, but the familiar green and yellow aerosol can is all over.

Funny you mention the Remoil bottles. I was in Academy a year or so ago, when there was still a .22 drought. Guy was desperate to find a box of .22, and there was none. I had seen some of the anniversary boxes - three packs (glass, can, spray) of Remoil with a box of .22 Thunderbolt on clearance for about $6. I took one, and pointed them out to the guy. He took the rest. I warned him that TB was nasty stuff, but it didn't slow him down. He grabbed at least 5, whatever was left. The oil was worth more than the price just by the ounce.

I've not seen Rig on the shelf in a long time.

chief: It's available right now on Amazon. I had posted the URL, but I wasn't sure that I was within the rules in doing that. Just type in rig gun oil and the 4.5oz. can is the first listing(was for me anyway). They have ten cans left; better order right away.

Another bad thing about the aerosol is the propellants are often flammable.

Yes I saw that yesterday however the price is more than TRIPLE what it should be! When I bought it in bulk, I paid $3.25 / can and plain old retail from MidwayUSA (1 can at a time) was $4.61 / can so I'm not about to pay $15 + tax. However I thank you though and appreciate the effort. I go through way too much of this stuff to pay $15 + bucks each.

When the Company was owned by Silencio they allowed me to send them factory fresh 1 gallon metal cans and so I bought a case of them, sent them directly to Silencio and they labeled and filled a case of 12. The 12 gallons lasted me about 12 years so you see I use about a gallon per year. A gallon contains about 29 4.5 oz cans and at $15 ea. comes to $435.00 + tax.

I'll use what I have up, then either switch to Remoil (if dripper cans are still available) or search for another product. I've got dozens of products in my cabinet that I can revisit and hope there is enough demand for Birchwood-Casey to make another run of the Rig #2. Remoil is OK, but not as good as the Rig IMO.

Yeah, I thought that might be high -definitely too high for me.

It's hard for me to conceive of using a gallon of gun oil a year, but you certainly don't have to explain it to me. Hope you can find a suitable alternative.

I spoke to Sandy in customer service and offered to buy in bulk or anything they had left in stock. She did actually check and said - not a drop was left!

Aside from the propellant, I wonder what they are putting in the current production aerosol cans?

I don't know. I will say the aerosol Rig #2 smells a bit sweeter and better then do the cans but have no idea as to why. The product itself seems to work the same - just a but messier to use.

What about their synthetic oil? No good or discontinued too?

The Birchwood - Casey Synthetic Gun Oil is excellent! I use it all the time but mostly on other things like antique fans, tools, sliding doors etc. not on guns. I do not like putting a thicker oil inside the workings of a gun where they can not be easily and routinely cleaned out. Thicker oils tend to pick up dirt, debris, unburnt powder, pocket lint, etc. They also continue to migrate out of the guns cracks & crevices onto clothing, holsters, etc. - don't care for that! Occasionally I'll use it on Slides of 1911's but again, never inside a gun where the side plate or receiver has to be disassembled. I am fully capable of disassembling pretty much any firearm, but don't like to have to do so on a monthly basis.

That is my personal opinion and realize others have different views and opinions - and that's fine. I've been using Rig#2 Oil for almost 35 or 40 years and it has NEVER failed me.

Chief38, I am not a big fan of aerosol gun gleaning or lubrications products either. I bought a few of those little plastic squeeze bottles with screw off tops that have a needle applicator built in. I just stick the plastic nozzle from the aerosol can inside the bottles, give it a couple of squirts and after the liquid settles I have the product ready for use in an easier to control applicator.

Not a bad idea - I'll give it a whirl outside and then bring it into workshop. Gracias to the idea.

Not trying to argue about "my oil better than your oil" but have you tried Ballistol? Pretty good stuff with a long history. Hey! Hickok45 uses it AND it smells weird. Whats not to like?

Yea I've tried it. Works well enough but it's a bit too greasy for my liking. Not crazy about the smell either. Again, I know many like it and it has certainly withstood the test of time - but some Guys like Coke and some like Pepsi and that is why both stay in business.
