A peek under the hood of a 640-1
I bought my 640-1 in 1997. It has been my under armpit vest carry or back pack carried back up 99% of the time since. It has been sweated on, rained on, punched (while in the vest), passed off to an injured and unarmed officer during a felony car stop and shot countless times. Today I decided I should probably take a peek at how everything was doing. All parts and pieces seem to be wearing very well and no rust was present under the hood, but neither was any element of lubrication.
After a nice swab down and lube up she went back together nicely and cycles oh so smooth now!

Ample testament to the fact that revolvers don't need much, if any, internal lubrication. My instructor at the armorer's school said to dampen my fingers with a bit of light oil before I re-assembled the gun, and that that would be sufficient. Many thanks to the late John Contro for answering all my stupid and incessant questions. He had the patience of Job.
The model 640-1 is a great balance of concealability and firepower and makes a great back up for officers.

If the parts look wet, there is too much oil on them.

Very thin film is the key. If the parts look wet, like Warren Sear said, it's too much oil.
