Question concerns the external extractor on the .45 acp 1911. Does anyone remove it to clean at some interval or just leave it alone, maybe use some gunscrubber or spray cleaner. Thanks in advance.
Tooth brush for routine cleaning. I've never removed the external extractor in any of the pistols I own that have them. Other than that, SFAIK, my 1006 service pistol only had ultra sonic cleaning of that item in 14 years of extensive use.
No necessary. Scrub a bit with a tooth brush. Dental pick if really grungy under the hook of the extractor. It can be a pita to put the pin back into the assembly as there is a pretty strong spring in it. Best leave it alone.
You might consider aerosol solvent (or non-chloronated brake cleaner, which is the same as many aerosol gun solvents) to flush out the extractor channel. Use aerosol solvents outdoors, the fumes are not something you want to inhale. Alternatively, if you have an air compressor or the canned air used to clean computers and keyboards, you can flood the extractor and channel with solvent and then blow out the solvent with air.
Thank you for all the replies gentlemen. I was cleaning a couple of other 1911's today, as in total teardown, and wondered about the external extractor on the S&W.
