Default Rust Removal for Nickel

Have heard bronze wool and gun oil will remove rust from blue gun without taking off the blue. Will the same thing work for nickel?
Maybe I should re-phrase my question. Is there a way to remove rust from nickel?

I would think any wire wool will scratch a nickel finish.

Unfortunately if you see rust on Nickel it’s most likely already got through the plating. Not much you can do at that point. You can clean the area of rust to stabilize the spot but it’ll be prone to do it again. Plus it’ll ever look like polished Nickel where the rust was removed.

Default rust

I have made several revolvers presentable by removing the rust, then I start hitting that spot with Flitz. I takes a lot of rubbing but the black rusty spot will start to get grey then lighter until just bright steel shines thru. It will turn your revolver into a 5 or 10 footer but if you keep oil on it, it shouldn't get rusty again. So far I haven't had one rust up again or the nickel start to flake.

I don't own the gun yet. Just has a couple of little areas with some rust. It is a 100+ years old so there is some flaking of the nickel.
Just wanting the best way to remove the rust with as little damage to the gun as possible.
