    S&W holster?

Colt New Service revolvers are just enough bigger than N-frames to feel the difference in a somewhat closely-fitted holster. However, they are close enough that the Army used the same holster for both for the Colt and S&W 1917 Models.

    Hit a trifecta this weekend

Even though it's a Colt, I am very envious of that Detective Special. You might want to do a bit of research about the city to which it was sold (Fordson, MI). As best I can tell, the city went out of existence and became part of Dearborn just about the time that that gun was sold to them. From...

A Charismatic little FrankenColt Detective Police Pocket Positive Special 38

That's really first-rate work on the butt (and barrel, too). Mine with the Detective Special barrel but without the other mods has a Police Department's initials and a number engraved on it. It seems like such a lot of work (in both cases) for such minimal benefit that I have speculated that...

A Charismatic little FrankenColt Detective Police Pocket Positive Special 38

The official Colt serial number is on the inside of the frame with the cylinder open. (also on the crane) That serial number on the bottom of the butt looks hand-applied and may be just a police rack number of some sort. If you check the "real" serial number you can find the year of production...

"Untouchables" S&W to Las Vegas Museum

If this link works it describes a S&W from the Al Capone/Untouchables era that is going to a museum in Las Vegas. Gun owned by agent who toppled Capone headed to Vegas museum - WSMV Channel 4

and he said " I built that gun" Roy Jinks

What follows is not as good as having an S&W with Roy Jinks' initials in it, but it's likely as close as I'll come to a revolver involving him: Years ago there was a big gun-related event held here at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville. I went to it and Roy J was there representing S&W. In the...

Need help with pricing on a M&P M10

Plain Old Dave's estimated selling price is a great example of the effect of geography on S&W prices. He's in East TN and I'm in Middle TN and a dealer at last week's gun show in Nashville had one similar to, but not quite as good as, the one described as: "...1949 vintage 5", in the box, with...

Beloit Wisconsin P.D. 38/44 Heavy Duty, and a few other pre war N-frame Police guns

Note that the one manufactured on the assembly line just ahead of the OP's gun is serial-number "60606". (and is listed on the invoice) I'd like to have any or all of the firearms shown, but would REALLY like to find number "60606". I already have a couple of other "palindrome" serial numbers...

    M&P Grip question

Mike - You must be from "up North". "Smidgen" is a common Southern unit of small quantity. It's equivalent in cubic-centimeters is not known, but you would know a smidgen when you saw one. ("Skootch" sounds alien to me...)

please help me identify this mystery artifact

A small oiler-can similar to that pictured is also shown in a WWII Army Technical Manual as part of the maintenance kit for cameras and related photo gear. The instruction for oiling the camera parts is given as applying: "1 sparing drop", which I suppose is the Army term for the small amount...

    Outdoorsman Mystery

As some have suggested, the "Kodiak Gun Works" may have been nowhere near Alaska. This thread was on my mind when I saw the "Alpine Cleaning Co." truck parked on my street earlier today. Nashville is nowhere near the Alps.

Now an old school ugly N frame contest

I'm lodging an official protest. :-) That last one looks too good to be in an "Ugly N-Frame" contest. (I wish I had it.)

Old Cop HD Gets A New Home

Very nice firearm! (and holster, too) Could you post a picture showing the whole holster (front and back)? I would like to have one of that era made up and I need a picture to show the leather man. Thanks!

    Triple Lock Target Advice/Opinions?

Thanks to all for the comments. With the long wait for letters, I'll have to go with what can be seen or logically inferred from what is there in front of me. It's a pawn shop situation, so I can't take it apart and check numbers, letters, etc. I think it's non-factory nickle because it just...

    Triple Lock Target Advice/Opinions?

I have a chance to buy a .44 Triple Lock and would like the opinion and advice from the experts here. As the old cliche goes, there is good news and (very) bad news: Good news: .44 Triple Lock Target (factory) three-digit serial number (6xx) good mechanical condition (Very) Bad news: Nickle...

    M1917 Colt versus S&W

Even though my sentiments lie with S&W (have three military S&W 1917's and one commercial 1917), I would seriously consider getting that Colt at that price, assuming good condition. I have one 1917 Colt, and might have two, if I found one like that. A local pawn shop recently had a Colt 1917...

    M1917 Colt versus S&W

You mentioned that the price of the Colt was "reasonable". Since no one here is in a position to buy it out from under you, can you say how much the asking price was?

    S&W in American Rifleman

This isn't the NRA's or "The American Rifleman's" fault, but while we're on the subject of that article on the Battle of the Bulge, have a look at the helmet of the museum manikin at the beginning of the article. Does anyone else think that the helmet is on backwards?

    NYPD 1947 M&P

That "too big" grip adapter for the OP Colt might be for a Colt New Service (bigger grip). I might be interested in the adapter if it's for sale.

    great-grandfather's top-break .38. please help!

"No formula that I have ever seen for recoil of a gun includes any consideration of pressure." Such formulas do account for pressure, but indirectly. The area under the pressure-length curve in the bore determines the kinetic energy of the projectile. For a given bullet weight that is easily...
