S&W new headquarters in TN grand opening

Time for a visit..... in 2025 I saw a news article online so I looked up where the factory is (Maryville TN) and how I could go visit it on one of our upcoming U.S. trips. It is too far away from our route to visit next year, but Karen and I will be back in eastern Tennessee in Sept/Oct 2025...

    No explanation needed

True story (so he says). So a guy at my club is always buying, selling, trading guns, mostly pistols. He travels a bit, usually day trips but sometimes 2-3 days away, when he visits some of the better gun stores in the mid-lower North Island. His wife sees him walk out the door with a pistol...

    Roofing scam in my area.

Every few years we get the Gypsy driveway sealers come through the country. A couple of years ago i read in the on-line edition of the regional newspaper they were in our area. Later that day I get called out to the road (it's only 6 yards from my front door and they couldn't open the gate), to...

    The Kiwi Travel Curse

The First Week Tuesday morning was another hot and fine morning. After a breakfast that out-rivalled those in American hotels, tropical fruit, hot food and continental, I made arrangements for a taxi into Sigatoka, the nearest "town". Noah, the taxi driver was very friendly and we chatted on...

    The Kiwi Travel Curse

This story starts last November. My brother and I were "working" one day when he mentioned plans to take his two granddaughters, then 5 and 6 years old, to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands for a few days. Karen and I had never been to the Pacific Islands, whereas Dean and his wife have made a few...

    Nasty rental car experience

I caution against using rental cars as test subjects when evaluating a vehicle. Karen and I are currently on our second MG ZST “Essence” in 2 years. The first we kept for 20 months and traded it in at 20,000 km when we found we had the cash to do so. 3 months and just over 2,500 km later on our...

    Road trip question

I use Google Maps when planning trips because you can add in destinations, stops etc if not going in a straight line. My issue with Google is that it will always use the shorts route, not necessarily the one you want to take (ie. Route 66 off the Interstates). Manually changing the route can be...

    Time Zones

When we visit America We leave Kiwiland at 7:30 pm, fly 14 hours and arrive in Houston about 4pm the same day we leave NZ. I know that US Central time is 18 hours behind NZ, when both counties are on DST (mid Sep to early Nov) During USDST the US is 17 hours behind us, and during most of...

Anyone here from the Louisville area?

The Opry House was flooded out in 2010 (I think from memory). You can still see the floodwater marks on the walls in the Green Room. The Opry Mills mall sits a bit lower than the Opry House, so I suppose that is the mall referred to. It has been rebuilt and is open (well it was last September).

Anyone here from the Louisville area?

Thanks. Already have the Opry and Andrew Jacksons Hermitage listed, and a visit to the Gaylord Opryland Resort. We're staying in Radlciff (Air&b) so Fort Knox and the Patton museum are already listed too. The corvette museum sound interesting (Karen is a petrolhead from waaaayyyy back.

Anyone here from the Louisville area?

Looking for some local input on Louisville over Derby weekend. Karen and I will be there from the afternoon of Fri 3rd to the morning of Sun 5th May next year. Looking for some activities that do not require walking for an hour or more (Karen's mobility is still a bit limited). Also, where is...

Doctor Says I Must Exercise More

A man and his wife in their late 90's go to the doctor for their annual checkup. "You're both in great physical health" says the doctor "How do you keep it up at your age. "We'll" says the husband, "the day we got married, 75 years ago, we decided that if one if us lost an argument then we had...

    Irony of gun control

It's worse in Kiwiland New firearms rules came into effect here several times after the March 15th 2019 mosque shootings in Christchurch. It was taking 12 months for firearms license renewals to be completed. When I applied for the new "Prohibited Class" license (for the magazine to my M2...

    El Rancho Hotel, Gallup NM

It is a wet and windy winter Saturday evening here in Kiwiland. I am curled up in my favourite chair watching a YouTube video trip along Route 66 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0bA72fjHMQ When the father and son duo reach Gallup they are staying at the El Rancho hotel. Many of you will know...

The 'Depression Burger' of Route 66

Didn't know about the Depression Burger back in 2018 when we found Sid's Diner, but the regular burgers we had were pretty good ones. The $5 basket of fries beat us, even though it was shared half went uneaten.
