    Grease for the hammer block

I found Grant Cunningham's article useful and have been following his advice for ten years or so. I haven't had any problems with my personal revolvers. I like moly grease in certain applications, too. Lubrication 101: Gun oil, snake oil, and how to tell the difference. -...

    S&W 296 .44 Special

Seems to me that of the problems the Scandium frames have, cracking is the most common complaint.

    S&W 296 .44 Special

I shoot CCI 200gr Gold Dots in mine, and have not had any accuracy issues. Swapping from the factory grips to some Pachmayr Compac grips made it very pleasant to shoot. Sooner or later, I'll run out of Gold Dots and go to the 180gr XTP handloads. As mentioned a couple times, frame cracking...

    My M40A1-ish Attempt

Looks like a good project. I was a PIG in STA Plt. when we had the A1s and then transitioned to the A3s. As much as I preferred the A1s, the 1:12" twist and the Unertl optic were limiting over today's rifle trends. I'd still take an M40A1 over any of the later models, though the XM-3 was a...

    Used 642-1 Missing Hammer Block

I never knew that about the concealed hammer models. It's been so long since I have been inside my 296, I don't remember what it looks like for comparison to all of my other exposed hammer S&Ws.

    Used 642-1 Missing Hammer Block

That makes me feel a lot better then! Both J-frames I have here a 60 and 34-1 had it and I was afraid I had lost something!

    Used 642-1 Missing Hammer Block

I'm cleaning up and doing an action job on a buddy's 642-1 and found it's missing the hammer block, along with the thumb latch and screw that were obvious. He just bought it as a police surplus gun and brought it to me. I guess it could have been cannibalized by the previous department. I'm...

    296 Ti Range report & sight ???

I've been carrying mine for years and love it. I've only ever carried CCI 200gr Gold Dots in it, but will eventually run out and have had a box of 180gr XTPs to load for it. My factory grips didn't survive the first removal since the nut began to turn in the rubber as I tried to unscrew the...

Picked Up a Project Gun: .32 Safety Hammerless 2nd Model

Uploaded a few photos to replace the broken links. I'll see if I can find the rest.

Picked Up a Project Gun: .32 Safety Hammerless 2nd Model

No, I've had it sitting in a tub of oil for years, and just not gotten back to it. I'll see about getting it done in the next couple months and posting some photos.

Anyone actually use a Randall Knife

A friend gave me this 1960s Randall 1-6" that he used to use heavily. He had blackened the blade with naval jelly, but I polished it off with a rag and Flitz. Unfortunately, the sheath was lost somewhere before I got the knife. I had this 1-7" delivered in 2010 and have carried it camping a...

    69 Cylinder in other L-Frames

Thanks, they are clearly different. I don't know if they are too different to do the conversion, but was curious as to the feasibility. I don't know if I'll ever bother to do my 686 to 696 conversion, but will probably hold on to at least one cylinder, just in case I get the urge later...

    69 Cylinder in other L-Frames

Thanks! The 696 and 296 have the same length cylinders, so I would assume the 396 is the same. .035" should be easy to take off the forcing cone after a rebore, otherwise, shortening the front of the cylinder wouldn't be difficult, either. Seems like it would be an easy enough modification...

    69 Cylinder in other L-Frames

I haven't paid that much attention to the Model 69, but swapping the 696 cylinder and hand into 686s, and even 681s, was done a number of times during the height of the 696's popularity, and lack of availability. Is there any reason the same couldn't be done with a Model 69 cylinder? I...

    New to me 38/44 HD

I just checked, .357 does not fit. As cool as it would have been for S&W to reintroduce the 38/44 in their Classic line, I think the .357 520 would have been a better seller for them, had they done that way. I need to get some photos up of the NYSP 520 I bought a year or two ago, too. When I...

    New to me 38/44 HD

When I come across one at the right price! For now, I think I need to look into a set of Culina grips for my 24-5 that has been sitting, unfired, for years. I think a good set of grips might be just what it needs to make it worth using. I think this old Heavy Duty only needs a T-grip, and...

    New to me 38/44 HD

Thanks, Steve. I'm really looking forward to shooting this one. I remember seeing the .45 Colt conversions of 38/44s in the 1990s in magazines and really liked the lines, though I couldn't see converting mine unless it was really rough, but it was enough to get me wanting one!
