    .44 Newbie Advise Wanted

You've got most of the good info already. My 2c, of all the "magnum" slower burning powders, I think 2400 loads down better than AA#9 and H110. For my mild magnum loads, it's my pick. I used it also in heavier 44 SPL loads with great success on paper and whitetails out of my 696. in all my...

    Double Action doe

Cleveland Township, Columbia County, PA. Last Thursday morning, ~7:40 am. 47 yards by laser to the tree she was standing near, double action (none of that cocking the hammer stuff!) with my M657 S&W 41 mag. 210 grain Hornady XTP over 21.8 grains of H110. Severely downhill shot, she was...

    .44 Special

That is my suggestion, find a good used 696. I have one that Teddy Jacobson turned DAO and I can carry IWB with a Milt Sparks Executives Companion holster. It's killed a whitetail doe and several groundhogs/woodchucks over the years. It's deadly accurate, even DAO.

    Stinky Gun?

This is one of the most bazaar threads!! I suspect your revolver was recovered from a rotting owner! Open it and flush with oil like everyone else is saying. Separate it from the grips. See which one stinks in a few weeks. Do report your findings.

    A sad lesson

JohnSW, Let me ask you a dumb question: Do you wear a seat belt when you drive to the grocery store?

    A sad lesson

yeah, but according to the article the OP linked, second degree?! WT_ is that?! That's seriously wrong. The shooter needs to be taken out to a field and strung up for the crows.

    DIY Barrel change?

OK, you guys convinced me. I might as well not even try it. Oh, did I tell you that Murphy has a full time job in my shop anyway, so what was I thinking! Actually, I might forgo the 2 inch idea and just get it chopped to 3. I pulled both that 10-6 heavy barrel and a 10-5 regular barrel out...

    DIY Barrel change?

While I'm not the most skilled mechanic, like many of us, I grew up on an old run down farm and did my own "fix'en" on my dirt bikes, cars & guns. I'm wondering if I can do it myself? I have to admit, I've never been comfortable mucking with the internals of a S&W revolver. But a barrel...

    Who to mill front sight

ydennekb, I can vouch for the work done by Karl Sokol at: Karl Sokol Chestnut Mountian Sports Gunsmithing Services He did a DAO conversion for me on a 581 that included milling for, and installing, an XS sights big dot tritium sight, and milling the rear notch a bit to match. Since I also...

44 special vs Magnum & aim

oh also, now that you understand how free recoil affects bullet impact, you will understand this: NEVER,NEVER,NEVER dial in a hunting revolver using a rest and expect it to hit the same free hand at distances much beyond 20 yards.

44 special vs Magnum & aim

YUP, oldjoe and k22fan got it spot on. Some folks refer to it as "dwell time", the time the bullet is in the barrel. Rule of thumb is faster/lighter will shoot lower than heavier/slower out of the same handgun. This is most pronounced with the bigger bores. My S&W 696 shoots Corbon's 44...

Hand Ejector with a star in front of the S#

I went back today with my SC S&W and figured out it was a 1905 1st model that was most likely factory refinished. Very early serial #. BUT, upon putting it through the standard protocol, found out it pushed off full cock real easy:( The proprietor had to pull it from sale. I offered to buy...

Hand Ejector with a star in front of the S#

Saw today, at a LGS, a 5" 32-20 hand ejector (sorry, not yet capable of telling you the model # at first glance:( that was pretty good shape. Since I don't yet own a 32-20, I took a look. It has a star symbol stamped ahead of the serial# on the butt. I've never seen that before. Does it...

Is nickle finsh worth it ?

Or if you carried them in the field for hunting. I never feel bad taking my SS's out when it's raining. First and foremost, I've loved blued revolvers for as long as I could remember. I agree they are the best looking guns. Also, like you, I'm not a big fan of nickel, with the only nickel...

    Model 696 in .41 Special?

What was the base gun? What was the base gun? Was it a 686 or a 696? Barrel, made or sourced? That is way cool!!!!

LE Agency purchase of 3rd Gen Smiths

Sorry guys, but I say good riddance! I guess I just didn't shoot enough of them, but I really don't know what all the fuss is about regarding traditional double action autos, S&Ws or Sigs. Of all the trigger systems I have shot, it is my most hated. Can't stand that transition, never could...

    Beveled cylinder

Not sure about the OP's gun, but that is the kind of beveling I love. Other than extra cost, not sure why this isn't done all the time!? My 629-4 mountain gun has it and it does make for much easier re-holstering.
