    Model 58 Odd, Old Custom

I'm not sure why photos aren't showing up, consistently. Imgur is the host and I've found it is very dependent on browser and VPN settings as to whether they work. I'm all ears for a better alternative as photobucket failed a number of years ago, too. Here are the photo links not embedded...

    Model 58 Odd, Old Custom

The trigger stop isn't adjustable. It is a solid piece of metal that is brazed on and fitted. I haven't set a price on it, nor made a decision whether to buy it from the estate or not.

    Model 58 Odd, Old Custom

I recently came across this in a friend's estate. It's a Model 58 with a trigger overtravel stop brazed on. It has an amazingly smooth and light action. Has anyone seen this screw in the bottom of the butt before? I didn't have time to take off the grips and see what it does, but assume it's...

    Identify M&P .38

Maybe I transcribed the serial wrong. I didn't have much time with it and the lighting wasn't great. It had patent markings down the top of the barrel and an assembly number on the frame behind the crane, I didn't see anything below the barrel on the flat. What I thought was a W started the...

    Identify M&P .38

Just got the image to work. All of his other firearms I have are from the '30s, but there are a lot missing, too. It was a clear "W" and on the serial number was all together, with the same font and spacing. I didn't notice a "V" on the other side of the lanyard loop like other Victory models...

    Identify M&P .38

I'm traveling for the holidays and my Uncle showed me my Great-Grandfather's M&P .38. Being on the road, I don't have my SCSW book, but am very anxious to find out more. It is a 4" tapered barrel, nickel .38 Spl with a lanyard loop and stag grips. As soon as imgur starts working for me, I'll...

    .41 Special in Model 58

I reload it for my steel matches, or anything else I might need a mild, accurate revolver for. I use Starline brass, which seems to be reinforced like a modern 9mm case in the web, rather than an original .38 Short Colt, .358" diameter 125gr lead bullets, and I think I settled on 3.0gr of...

    .41 Special in Model 58

I'm shooting for a 215gr SWC .41 at about 950-1050fps. Unique is pretty hard to beat for a powder. Ready For The .41 Special? Reloading for .41 Caliber Handguns: .41 Mag and .41 Special | Rifle, Handgun, and Pistol Brass http://www.sixguns.com/tests/tt41spec.htm .44 just depends on where...

    .41 Special in Model 58

Nothing wrong with loading .41 Magnum down to the same velocity, except a little extra space in the case. I think the .41 Special really has an advantage when you build one on a .357-size gun. A few around here have had .41 Specials built: S&W .41 SPECIAL I have a few spare 686 Mountain Gun...

    .41 Special in Model 58

I have heard you can't get a good crimp on the Specials without shortening the die. I'm not fast to change up my reloading press, so we'll see when I get around to this! I am taking a class in a couple weeks and was thinking I may shoot this 58 if I don't shoot my 627 with .38 Short Colts. I...

    .41 Special in Model 58

It was the only 58 I could find at an affordable price at the time. The 58 was a gap in my S&W collection, so I went for it. I bought a few hundred rounds of .41 Mag that just didn't make it in the move, unfortunately. I thought it would be at home as a concealed carry and pistol class gun in...

    .41 Special in Model 58

I've had an old S&W 58 .41 Mag sitting for years since I lost the ammo in a move and never had a need to go replace it. I couldn't come up with a single thing I needed a 4" fixed sight .41 Mag for that I wouldn't use one of my adjustable sight .44 Mags for. .44 Special is one of my favorite...

    8 3/8" 629-1 First Range Trip

My rear sight is .160". Interestingly, my 6" 29's is about .120".

    8 3/8" 629-1 First Range Trip

Thanks, all. I'll confirm the rear sight is .160", as it should be; I've found stranger things to have been swapped on old guns. Like I said, factory 240gr was doing similar to my lighter loads. I normally hold on the X, but even tried a lollipop hold to see if that helped. Maybe it was a...

    8 3/8" 629-1 First Range Trip

I bought this 629-1 early this Spring, and shared a photo of it on another thread. I had it out to the range for the first time earlier in the Summer, but haven't taken it back out. I was shooting my powder puff .44 Mag loads (240gr hard cast at about 1100fps out of a 4"), as well as some...

    Model 22 (45 ACP)

I've had mine for quite a few years, and carry it in this elephant-trimmed J.W. O'Rourke inside the pants holster. One of these days I'm going to try some 255gr. hard cast Auto Rim in it.

    29-4 5" Hill Country Dist ??

If you're ever in Austin, swing by McBride's Guns and ask for Lee. He worked at Hill Country Dist. for many years, and can probably tell you more about them; I'd bet McBride's was also their largest account.

    Gun Smith Classes

I don't know what is in the Penn Foster class, but as Phantom 1 said, look for the NRA Short Term classes. Montgomery Community College in NC usually offers an S&W class taught by Mark Dye, who worked for Hamilton Bowen for many years, among his other qualifications. I think cost is $201 for a...

Looks familiar! I just picked up this 629-1 a couple weeks ago.

    Safety hammerless question(s)

If you have the time and don't mind dropping a few dollars, have fun and get it working. One option to fix the bad rifling, once you have the action working, is have a gunsmith back bore it a bit. I don't see why that wouldn't fix the issue, though it is by no means traditional. It also lets...
