    1950 Target 44, 4-inch, Bright Blue

Osage Orange/Hedge Learn something every day. I had no idea anyone made grips out of Osage Orange! Beautiful. In northwest Missouri we have lots of Hedge trees which is what the locals call Osage Orange. I'm told the pioneers planted them in rows which would grow so thick they became a...

    .38 S&W for Defense?

There are some great responses on this thread already. I think it comes down to whether you have something else more powerful, say .38 Special or better, that you can conceal to your satisfaction. If you do not, then the .38 S&W is what you should carry. Practice and use the best ammo you...

Do you shoot your nice 27-2's?

If I had one I would... (wishing I did). I shoot all my others!

Removing Tiny Rust Spot from 29-3

I have a 95% 29-3 except for what appears to be a pinhead sized rust spot on the side plate. Not even sure it is rust but I cannot just wipe it off. On hand I have some Mothers which I use on stainless steel guns - and I've heard it can be used carefully to remove rust on a blue gun. Any...

No Longer a .44 Magnum Owner...

Last week I went from one to two 29-3's and find myself yearning for a .44 Special besides. An illness I guess.

New to Me 29-3 Lew Horton

Thanks guys - Must admit though that that group was shot at pretty close range. 5 degrees outside and a foot+ of snow - just ran outside with that target stapled to a box, sat down and went bang bang. Will try some careful shooting and checking various loads tomorrow at an indoor range.

    new guy model 29 questions

Your camera may have a setting to take "small" or "basic" pictures which use less camera/computer space. You could try re-taking the pics in a smaller format. Or your computer may allow you to downsize the pics it already has to something that is more manageable for e mailing or posting here...

    what have I got?

Very nice - I'd say it dates to the late 1980's, maybe 1989. Go shoot it - you'll feel better just like I did after shooting my new to me 29-3 yesterday. Details in seperate thread on this forum.

Almost got stomped?? None of my business I know but what almost "stomped" you? A moose (we almost hit one last year in Maine) or some other critter?

    Lew Horton Markings

Felt great! Shot just a little below poa but I have to add it was 5 degrees and a north wind and out in the snow so some of that may have been human error. 5 rounds all in a bunch and one flier which surely was my fault!

    Lew Horton Markings

Just put 6 soft rounds through this little jewel. Shoots very well with 240 grain LSWCHP at 1000fps. A modest load to be sure and recoil was accordingly gentle for a .44 Magnum.

    Lew Horton Markings

The 29-3 in question is ALB78XX. Buff - your description is exactly what mine is and it looks exactly like the two pics provided by engine49guy. Buff I guess I should say that the trigger is smooth and the hammer is checkered but I cannot say for sure whether the hammer is target or...

    Customizing .223 Cartridge Length

2.255 sounds good - but I've already loaded 15 rounds, 5 each at 2800, 2900, and 3,000 fps with Varget at 2.260". Now I have to wait for a break in the blizzard to quit so I can try them out and refine the data for the load I really want to use. And M1gunner - I'll do my best. :-) Hope also...

OK, so what differences should I look for in a Lew Horton Special and a standard 29-3?

Understand - please be careful and safe. In an emergency do what you must, but it would be good to know the local and Alaska laws on carrying and especially on using your weapon. Hopefully you already know all that stuff.

    Lew Horton Markings

Have a new to me Lew Horton 29-3 with 3" barrel. What markings did Lew Horton put on their guns? The marks I see other than normal S&W stuff is a "K" and a "G" on the frame under the grips. Each of those letters is fully enclosed by a circle and another marking on the grip and also on the...

    new guy model 29 questions

Congratulations! Welcome to the forum. I have two 29-3's and love them both. Yes you can carry a round under the hammer - decades ago Smith began putting a mechanical gate under the hammer so that even if dropped on the hammer it will not discharge. As to the heaviest load I think that no...

    Customizing .223 Cartridge Length

Yes the rifle is an AR. Here's what I've done so far. Without any special tools or case modifications I made a dummy round (no primer and no powder), made sure it was "too long" and chambered it by hand the first time allowing the lands to push the bullet back. It now measures 2.275" as...
