Model 19-5 in need of help...

I'll definitely think on it before spending a pile of dough. Perhaps a parts gun is all it is. The customer service rep at S&W described a tech at a bench covered with side plates doing a shuffling act until one fit reasonably close and then hand fitting the final bit. Too bad they want to turn...

Model 19-5 in need of help...

Since you are asking, I was attempting to describe the fractional firearm I held in my hands relative to some standard: Fjestad's Blue Book of Gun Values wherein a firearm is judged relative to the percentage of original finish remaining on the metal surfaces. The purpose being so that others...

Model 19-5 in need of help...

Spoke to the source. This morning I got a chance to speak with Smith & Wesson customer service. I laid my problem out and got the reply it could not be done due to lack of parts availability. I offered to scare up the discontinued parts and asked if that would be acceptable. Admirably they were...

Model 19-5 in need of help...

Have recently come into possession of a model 19-5. It is very clean (95-98%) but suffers from a serious problem: it is missing numerous critical parts. In fact all that exists are the frame (with barrel), sights, crane, cylinder, cylinder stop assy. and cylinder latch assy. The previous owner...

    SALE vs TRADE IN $$$

Maybe it is regional but dealers in my area don't want to pay anything - they want to steal guns. Not a S&W but about a year ago I was at a local counter when an old buck was trading in a NIB Beretta 28ga in a high grade that he had bought from the same dealer hoping to get his bride out in the...

    Ahrends grip advice

Good grips but I have a comment: in this day and age no company can afford to spend the time finishing a grip a poor college student can. I've not been a college student for over 25 years but I too am thinking of doing my own. Why? I can afford to spend more time finishing my grips than Ahrends...

Change in rifling method in late '90s

I believe what you are looking at is EDM rifling. A search on that should turn up some more information.

How about a .500 Magnum thread -- All models Pros & Cons!

Scope mounting Regarding scope mounting it is most definitely beneficial to increase area with additional rings. That said we might want to examine how well our first two rings are working. Ring to scope contact can often be improved through reaming and/or lapping. This is something I first...

My first firing of a 44 Mag.

One thing to keep in mind is that the 44mag is more than Elmer was wanting. So with that in mind I load his version of warm 44 specials in my MG. In heavier, longer barreled 44mags I go full tilt for hunting.

    FS: S&W 624 3" barrel (SPF)

For sale S&W model 624 (no dash) 44Special with 3" barrel (no box/papers). Gun is in excellent overall condition. While I am not qualified to assign a condition, it rated as 95% at the time of purchase by a very large dealer nearby (ktpguns.com) and I have not holstered or fired this revolver...

10MM is sufficient for any animal in the Eastern U.S.

New England moose can run to 1000#. They'll take a boiler room hit with a 30-06 180gr and still have enought life left in them to stumble off into a swamp to die. A 10mm would not be a great choice unless the plan was top get the best hunting ammo available, get close, and unload the whole mag...

At what point does a "load" become a "Magnum"?

Your question is a good one but I'm quite sure you will find no single correct answer. As pressure/velocity increase the ideal bullet hardness will shift with as many degrees as colors of the rainbow. In your gun there is likely one ideal hardness for 800fps and another for 1200fps. Arbitrarily...

    624 Snubbie Question

good cylinder? If there's no box to check that it has been screened for the potential cylinder problem you could always make the deal contingent upon an inquiry to S&W - unless you want to take a chance or otherwise know it to be in the clear.

624 to buy or not to buy? Got it, PICS!!!

Per the posts and commentary on this web site, I simply emailed Kate regarding my prospective purchase and she emailed me back within 24 hours with the news that the 624 in question was in the clear - good cylinder. Easy and peace of mind. I went right ahead and completed the deal.

    I have a 629 MG, should I buy a 4" 624?

True, but WPWarhawk said he was a shooter - not a collector. I say the 629 MG is more versatile! I also have and enjoy a 629 MG and recently decided to complement it with the 3" 624. Now I'm chasing down a custom mold for the fat cylinder throats

UPDATE (it's back) - Well, my 3" 624 Lew Horton is on its way back to S&W

Got word the 624 I'm interested in (ALWXXXX) is in the clear with respect to the recall. I still don't understand the conflict between the post by "catdad" and the serial number range of the 624 recall posted in the FAQ.

UPDATE (it's back) - Well, my 3" 624 Lew Horton is on its way back to S&W

I'm about to buy a 624 from a local dealer (ALWXXXX) and have been on this site doing my homework. I saw the recall FAQ and all looked OK. Then I read this post and now am not so sure from the FAQ: Today, Kate Fredette of Smith & Wesson basically confirmed this same info. The serial number...
