Other sources indicate it's a function of the striker angle - the pins doesn't come straight out of the bolt face as on other guns, it comes out at an angle causing the odd marks.

Thanks All, While cleaning the pistol I took note of the striker where the firing pin contacts the primer - it's shaped like the primer hit. Still, I'll ask around a local board and probably contact S&W too. Thanks again
