If you think you can afford it, I'd say retire early. My Dad worked hard all of his life & then passed away a month before he could retire.
Life's too short to spend it all working.
Me, I expect to retire when I turn 107.
I prefer 7.62 x 39 but I wouldn't consider 5.56 to be poor. If I remember correctly, 5.56 is what the Seals used when they took down bin Laden. They probably could have used anything they wanted.
I visited Appomattox Court House Military Park recently. It's interesting to walk around the area.
