    .44 American update

According to Pate's book, it is more likely that Americans were in use by the Indian warriers. And of the cartridges recovered in the 1980's, it was determined they were found in what is thought to be Indian-held locations. This gun at some point had lost a portion of the left side stock. It...

    .44 American update

My grandfather was born in 1885 and died in 1967 at age 82. From what I understand he started renting houses in the late 1920's until his death.

    .44 American update

I have sought information from Springfield Research Service but they have no information beyond that it was shipped from S&W to the Springfield Armory which I already knew from the Jinks letter. Apparently any records by serial number to any particular Army unit no longer exists. This is also...

    .44 American update

It's been awhile since I posted here about the progress made on my original US marked first model American. As a reminder this pistol first became known to me in 1967 when my dad brought it from Saskatchewan Canada following the death of his father. We had no idea what it was or where my...

    American First Model

Anyone who owns an authentic model 3 U.S. stamped American would not "*****" it up to increase value.

I think this is the shot we're looking for. This photo is from my model 3 American .44. Post a similar shot so we can determine the caliber of your pistol.

    The Holy Grail Smith

I am fortunate to be the proud caretaker for an original 1 of 1000 US marked model 3 Americans with the "oil hole" and factory letter from Roy Jinks. Not bad considering our family had it for over 70 years without knowing the history or importance of the weapon. Dumb luck? Absolutely!

Smith and Wesson US Marked American

For comparison purposes, here are some pictures of a first model American. Note the straight line (no bump) trigger pin. Also showing the cylinder bore straight through without a step as found in the Russian model 3.

    Happy sesquintennial anniversary

150 years ago today, the majority of the 1000 gun order of model 3 Americans were shipped to the Armory. This was one of them. US marked "oil hole" version.

First Model American with oil hole shipped 150 years ago

Since we're sharing factory letters of our Americans, I had to scrounge to find mine that I got from Roy almost 10 years ago. Shipped to the armory 150 years ago (in another month or so.)

First Model American with oil hole shipped 150 years ago

What is meant in your letter as "shipped with rings" and what is your family history, if any, with this prized gun?

Show your oldest top break S&W revolver

1st model American This is my American, one of the original of 800 blued model 3 sold to the US Army. Serial #1030, it includes the "oil hole" and has all the proof and inspector markings as well as matching assembly numbers with original walnut stocks.

    S&W n.3

A quick question for those who own a model 3 first model American: When holding the pistol outstretched at arms length, it feels like the pistol is front balanced. That is, the business end tends to pitch down with the center of gravity being around the front of the cylinder. Of course I have...

    S&W n.3

Besides the size of the number 0 in the photo of the revover in question, it appears that the area on the frame butt has been either ground down or perhaps chemically etched to remove the original serial number. I'm not saying it was done maliciously; it may have been illegible and was...
