    Model 58 S-Prefix Question

More and more, it's looking like it was refinished. A previous owner had also added gold paint fill to the stamped areas, which I removed. He did a beautiful job and it shoots great, but I wish it was original. In California, a state where older Smith revolvers are not readily available and...

    Model 58 S-Prefix Question

I have a Model 58 with an S-Prefix. The Catalog indicates a date range of 1968/1969. One observation about this revolver is the trigger is uniformly blue and the hammer uniformly satin. I have a couple of other Smith revolvers from the early seventies and they have case hardened triggers and...

My new Model 64 (in .357 Magnum)

Thanks for the information on my lucky find. My serial number is not far from yours Klyde. D673350, which puts it a little outside the D672000+1200 range. But the letter did say approximate. Not in tip top shape, just some good honest wear. The grips that came on it were not originals...

My new Model 64 (in .357 Magnum)

I came across this recently at a local shop. When I asked to handle it, I expected it to be a .38 Special, the stainless steel version of the model 10 with a heavy barrel. Lo and behold, it's a 64-1, chambered in .357 Magnum with a recessed cylinder! I had the fellow behind the counter drop a...

.38 Special Loads for Model 14 Target Masterpiece

Next week I will be picking up a beautiful Model 14-4. This will be my first dedicated .38 Special revolver. Oh wait! My second. My first is a Model 36 with 3" barrel. Anyway, I'm wondering if there anything I should know about loading for the Model 14 to optimize it's performance? I...

    Hammers

Thank you Armorer. Looks like I'll have to wing it for the most part. Should I ever actually do this conversion, I will report back my experience.

    Hammers

Can someone please tell me if most pre-1980 K and N frame revolvers share the same hammers or are they model specific? For example, would a hammer purchased from Numrich from the Model 13 Schematic fit a 14, 15, 19, etc.? Also, do the dash numbers apply or does one fit all? From the way the...

The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

Usually partial to wood, I have Culina grips on order for this 28-2. But in this case, I don't mind the look of the rubber Pachmayr Presentation grips. They just seem to suit the gun. N573XXX, 1979.

Could Someone Please ID These Grips?

I picked up a Model 28-2 recently. No box, papers or original grips. But being a CA resident and very limited in buying options, I'm pleased as punch to have it. These grips were on it. I don't care for them, so I placed an order with Culina and they are on their way. But I am curious about...

    S&W bluing love...

Is it unusual to have a slight variation in hue between the barrel and frame? My model 58 has an overall beautiful, deep luster. However, the other day I was wiping it down in the bright sunshine and the barrel looked noticeably more "purplish" to me. Will try to get a photo of it in the sun.

    27-2 8 3/8 Barrel

I'll take a shot at it. Manufactured between 1975-1977 per the Standard Catalog. For value, I'd check COMPLETED listings on Gunbroker for a clue. Looks like 800-1000 is the range.

Picked up a Model 28 in near new condition

The gun is awesome, but sorry, not a fan of the grips. They just don't look right on that gun.

New 66-1, Question about unusual stocks

Tom_R, I never got a clear understanding of which grips came on the 66-1. Mine is from 1979. Googling an answer further muddied the picture. Some said speedloader targets came in the early 80s, others said late 70s. I finally just Googled Smith 66-1 and looked at images. I saw plenty of...

New 66-1, Question about unusual stocks

I'll bet you are right. I think the company is Grand Blue and they are made from sandalwood. Once again, I've learned something new here!

New 66-1, Question about unusual stocks

Welcome the newest member of my slowly growing S&W revolver family. A tried and true 66-1. It came with no box or papers and did not have the stocks shown in the top photo. What I am curious about are the stocks it was wearing when I first spotted it in the case (photos 2, 3 and 4). I didn't...

The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

I recently came across a 28-2 with a 6" barrel. Serial number indicates a later manufacturing date of 1979. It did not come with original grips, so I am going to start searching. Were the magnas the standard issue during this time period? My dad bought a 4" back in 1974 and it had the...

    Model 58 Sighting

If it's not on this list, it can not be brought in from out of state. See any older Smiths on there? Or Ruger Security Six? No. So online sources like Gunbroker are not an option. You can purchase off roster handguns via a private party or consignment, so it's not like they are banned...

    Model 58 Sighting

Well, there has been a slight delay. Here in CA there is a 10 day wait period and I just got a call from the very apologetic dealer that they made an error when submitting the paperwork. I can't get back there to redo it until Tuesday (on their dime) so it won't be until December 13 that I am...

    Model 58 Sighting

Thanks for the advice. I do reload, but don't cast. I am familiar with Rimrock. Checking out their site, I found 215 SWC in both standard and premium. The standard specifies the 15BHN you mentioned. $45 for 500. No image available, so I don't know if the lube is red or blue. Are these the...
