Congrats. I'm a new black rifle owner as well. My AR isn't a pure bred like yours (just the lower is S&W) but in the climate I was just happy to find out that only cost a leg and not both arms and a leg. (I was waiting and couldn't wait any longer)
One red dot to perhaps look at are the ones...
Well... she's not a pure bred S&W after all. I braved the cold and took her out to the range. And she performed. Here are some pics:
(Target was at 50 yards. Orange sticker an inch. Black box Federal 55 grain from Walmart. 1st group was the top after 20-30 rounds of just getting used...
I contacted the original owner and got more info. It was built to order for him. But this is the info from the spec sheet:
- 16" 5.56mm caliber barrel, threaded the standard 1/2 x 28, A2 flash hider with the correct crush washer
- forged A2 front sight base with bayonet lug...
I found this video to describe various BCG's including a S&W.
AR-15 Bolt Carrier Group Comparison - YouTube
- Mine isn't as staked as the sample S&W in the video.
- It does have the more massive back part
- It does have the shrouded firing pin
I can't tell if it's been shot peened. or if...
Are there any other marks on a S&W upper? (to verify if this isn't a factory built gun, what upper is it?)
(the finish from the lower to the upper is the same (i know, that's not very telling)).
Rifle was acquired used; I'm not sure the history. The inside doesn't look too used. No slop...
i don't have a tool so I can't remove the handguard. I can see below the rails though and it's not marked (unless it's UNDER the handguard but it has a metal shield so I can't see through the hole).
Nothing stamped on the top of the barrel between the front sight and flash suppressor.
Hello.
I'm trying to identify the barrel twist rate and if the barrel is a 223 or 5.56.
This is on an M&P15. This is the lower: (normally it should say the caliber on the lower right under "M&P 15" right?
...and then both sides of the barrel. There is no identifying marks on the...
I've got the PA m3 (I believe) red dot and love it. It was mounted on a 7.62x39 AK and just recently moved it to a Saiga in 308. Holds zero. Very good dot.
My sister has the microdot and I think I prefer that. "sharper" dot and less bulky.
I shoot aguila in my 686. It's cheap and it gives me 2-3 inch groups at 25 yards pretty easily too.
It's the best 22LR ammo I can find (afford) for my ruger 10/22s also. (40 grain high velocity)
Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for all the recent comments.
I decided to shot it a little more and wait on the barrel. I was at the range the other week and surprised myself with a 2.5 inch group standing/unsupported! The other groups weren't too bad either.
I didn't even think that...
Thank you Ignatz. When you sandbag a 1911 to bench test, do you rest your hands on the sandbag, do you lay the bottom of the bun (magazine well or under the barrel) on a sandbag? I'm thinking of a better way to 'benchrest' while I test loads/accuracy.
Question - what is an "older bullseye...
I was looking for a 38/357 a few years ago; I was still new to firearms. A good friend suggested S&W. I always heard the name and knew they were good but didn't have direct experience. I found a 686 for sale used and purchased it not knowing too much about it.
At the range, I shot a 5...
Thank you for the comment. That what I thought; if I want to hit tiny holes at 50 yards, I'll upgrade. I'm going to start to start to save up and then I'll repost on how it does. In the meanwhile, I know I can continue to practice.
Even benched, I know it's not 100% stable in my hands.
Thanks Kevin. and yes it does, at one point, I made a whole mess of different rounds with semi wadcutters with different OALs just to see if they would feed (and they did). And what you say makes me feel better than it's doing 'ok' until I save some lunch money towards a match barrel (in the...
