    bullet seating stems

9mm seating stem is another option If you have a set of dues for 9mm the seating stem should be a much better fit for the SJHP’s. The tradeoff is having to back the die way out to account for a much longer cartridge and then seat and crimp in separate steps Out of curiosity, do you know if the...

substitute small rifle primers for small pistol magnums in 357?

Hi guys, I'm wondering if any of you have used small rifle primers in place of small pistol magnum primers, especially in 357? The loads in question would be using H110 and Blue Dot. Anything I should be aware of? I'll be starting over with load development at 10% under previous WSPM based...

    45 acp heavier loads

Hi Welcome to the forum. A couple of comments: If you use cast bullets instead of jacketed you can expect a significant increase in muzzle velocity for the same load. So you might want to get some cast bullets. According to the Starline brass website, 45ACP +P cases have a thicker web so they...

Taper v. Factory crimp die for .45 ACP

I was having problems with cast bullets jumping the crimp in a 625 with tight chambers and throats. Solved the problem with a roll crimp from a Lee FCD for which Lee machined the crimp ring so that one side of world give a roll crimp and the other side gave a taper crimp. Cost was dominated by...

    45 acp reloading issue

I had a similar issue with loads for a 625-8. Another vote for the Lee Factory crimp die. Something you could do is take the de-capper pin out of your sizing die and run the offending rounds thru the die. That should size them down so they chamber.

    Problems with S&W M1955 in .45 Cal.

Pardon my ignorance guys but doesn’t 45 caliber mean the same as 45 colt? I thought the 45 ACP gums were marked as such. Ira

Marlin Golden 39A has New Home

Congrats on a really nice rifle, I think you did well at that price. I think one of the bonus features of that vintage is that they were drilled and taped for Lyman and Williams receiver sights. Have fun

S&W Heavy Duty 38 Spl - load recommendations

I have an old Speer # 11 (from the bad old days of CUP pressure measurements). These were all labeled 38 +P loads, not heavy duty / 38-44. So for what its worth, these are some of my results: Penn 158Gr LFP and Hornady 158Gr LSWCHP 2400: 9Gr: 980 fps 10Gr: 1050 fps Unique: 5Gr: 920 fps...

    Concealed carry for bicyclists?

Hi Sixenough, I ride a rode bike pretty regularly in NW Oregon, SW Washington. My biggest concerns are the occasional pack of feral dogs. Now that the laws in OR and WA have changed I don't have to worry about the local recreational pharmaceutical farmers. My usual attire is a pair of regular...

    New 66-8 2.75"

Another victim of M66 2.75 lust here. Only had time to put 60 rounds down range through it but these are my impressions so far: Trigger: DA > 12 lbs on trigger gage, SA ~ 5lbs with creep (not what I expect from S&W), will install Wilson reduce power spring kit & extended length firing pin as...

What loads are you using for Hornaday XTP?

for 625 w/ 5" barrel 230gr Hornday XTP 6.8 gr BE86: Avg MV 873 (7gr should get ~ 900fps) 9.0 gr Blue Dot: Avg MV 924 225 Gr Laser Cast LTC 6.5 gr Unique: Avg MV 922 I've got some Power Pistol but haven't worked up any 45ACP loads with it yet Good luck, have fun and be safe

38 Spl +P Power Pistol - Oct 2016 Handloader Mag

Welcome back, I'm another long time fan of Unique because of its versatility. However I recently purchased a pound of Power Pistol and was pretty impressed. My results w/ 4.25" M66-8: 38 spcl, Starline cases, WSP primers, Pen 158 Gr truncated cone hard cast 5.7 gr PP 971fps avg MV, 6 fps std...

Max pressure for 45 colt loads in Governor

The Governor supports 45ACP whose SAAMI spec is 21KPSI max. Not Ruger levels but I'd suggest that's a reasonable limit for your purposes. If you and your neighbor are hand loading, I'd suggest Unique powder as the basis for your experiments. Three reasons, it's pressure characteristics are very...

About to reload some 357 mag

For your stated target & plinking uses, my vote is also in that 900 - 1000 fps range, maybe up to 1100 fps when I want to hunt the elusive milk jug. For your purposes I'd recommend cast bullets rather than the XTP based on cost. Plenty of good choices out there. A good guess is that the lead...

Problem with 66-8: powder fouling causing cylinder to bind

When the pistol comes back I'll try the Titegroup and Unique loads to see if the problem got fixed or at least improved. After that, I'm not sure. I have some HS6 and BlueDot that I could try, at least for full house loads. Around here, pistol powders availability is still pretty iffy. By the...

Are .45 auto rim and .45 ACP loads the same?

For what its worth, Hatcher, in his 'Textbook of Pistols and Revolvers' lists the following data(from 1927) as factory data 45ACP 230 Gr Bullet 810fps 45ACP 200 Gr Bullet 910fps 45AR 230 Gr Bullet 810fps 45AR 255 Gr Bullet 740fps (Peters Cart. Co.) the later matched the .45...

Problem with 66-8: powder fouling causing cylinder to bind

Hi Guys, A quick update: I put together 50 rounds of 357 using H110 (16.5 Gr) under 158 Gr XTP bullets. Those left powder residue on the yoke but not enough to bind up the cylinder. So that was a step in the right direction. I did call S&W factory service and described the problem. The fellow...

Problem with 66-8: powder fouling causing cylinder to bind

Guys, thanks very much for the info. Not having a gas ring on this model really explains the problem. I'll load up a couple of batches of ammo with 2400 and 296 to see if that helps. If that doesn't do it I'll call factory service and find out what they have to say. By the way, the barrel -...
