And do not apply any TruOil or other finish to the checkering. As others have said, clean with toothbrush and use Ren wax. Can "polish" the Ren wax in the checkering with a toothbrush. Applying any oil/finish to the checkering will scream of refinish and look lousy, compared to original finish.

I think the above is a great description of the process I used. And, before you start you can use different length "slivers" of masking tape on the ramp to figure out precisely how long a length to paint. That is if you're as fussy as me.
