Getting an old war horse back into action- S&W 1917 D.A 45

Long distance diagnosis is always sketchy, so lots of questions… Is it always the same two chambers that have light strikes? Have you tried different brands of ammo? When you say that the Wilson spring fails to stay in place, what exactly is happening? Has the strain screw been altered...

    Dayton 14-2 Hanen Special

I think you probably hit the answer there at the end…policy makers were hesitant to allow officers to carry guns that were “magnums”. Another example is the model 68: a .38 special version of the model 66 that was used in California.

    .22 Bolt Action Rifle

I have several…Winchester 69A and 75, Remington 513 and 521, but it’s the single shot 510P that goes along on almost every range trip. My 50 yard target for those guns is a 2”x2” piece of steel that hangs from my target frame. A box of CCI standard velocity ammo and a single shot .22 is a...

HomeSmith Custom Shop: The Faux Pinto Thread

Busy weekend at the bench…the 10-8 conversion to .357 got done, the 65-3 refinish and trigger job got done, and the 19 frame had the metal work done (I thought), 2 rust cycles, was stripped down to bare metal again to fix a scratch that didn’t really show until the bluing started to come up, and...

    Electric Fly Swatter Query

Two years ago a wasp stung me in my backyard, so I went full Paul Kersey on them. The nests on my property were handled with brake cleaner and wasp spray…the singles that come in from other areas get hunted down one at a time. The shock racket works well but you have to be close and leaves...

    Hammer Bobbing...opinions, please.

I’m part of the “use the type of hammer that works best for you” group. If it’s reliable and fits your personal style then it’s the right one. I prefer a bobbed hammer on guns with barrels shorter than 4” in a K frame or smaller. Longer barrels and N frames get regular hammers. This one...

    Vintage 1956 Pre-24 how rare is a 5" barrel ?

Here’s the front sight of a 1950 that letters as shipped with a 6 1/2” barrel then cut to 5” later. It looks very similar to the one posted above… @Marksman - Does your gun have a date stamp on the grip frame? This gun was returned to the factory in January of 1971.

    New Barrel Old Frame

A few more details would help…what frame and what barrel? Smith used quite a few different frame profiles and contours within their standard sizes. The barrel may thread on but not match up well at the top or the area around the ejector rod shroud if it has one.

moving my herd east, looking for advice

How many firearms are we talking about? There’s a big difference between 20 and 200….. If you’re going to sleep in the back of the truck that would tell me that the truck won’t be completely full. I beg you to consider getting a motel room instead of sleeping in the truck. That used to be my...

moving my herd east, looking for advice

Happy that you’re leaving the left coast and heading to a better area. Without giving details that would make the truck easy to spot or make you a target, please share a bit more about the cab configuration, your overnight plans, and if you’re doing this alone. Don’t talk about your route...

HomeSmith Custom Shop: The Faux Pinto Thread

As an interesting part of this little side trip, I have discovered how to artificially age a gun… Another interesting thing (to me) is that it’s quite a bit more difficult to take off my rust blue than it is to take off the original finish. After being scrubbed with 5 different grades of...

HomeSmith Custom Shop: The Faux Pinto Thread

I haven’t forgotten about you guys….this project is on temporary hold because another project went south. The other gun I’m working on got through rust cycle #8 beautifully, then rust cycle #9 with a 25% acid solution somehow got contaminated during the boil and produced a haze on the frame and...
