    185gr JHP in 45ACP-1000fps impossible

Had you not read into my posts you would see I never said bullseye will produce 1000fps. What I said was given my results it would take 7+grs to get to a 1000fps which BTW I already knew because I had consulted several reloading manuals as well as alliant's site. I used 1000fps to make a point...

    185gr JHP in 45ACP-1000fps impossible

Sierra-950fps, Lyman-976fps, Alliant-986...I would think 950's would be reasonable...evidently not...general consensus is use a medium burn rate powder.

    185gr JHP in 45ACP-1000fps impossible

I said nothing of the sort. I never said the loads tested should deliver max velocity. What I did say was that based on loads tested it would appear I'd have to be 7+grs to get to 950's. I never said the loads I tested should be delivering max-load velocity.

As mentioned earlier I have both those manuals.

    185gr JHP in 45ACP-1000fps impossible

True, haven't tried max load yet. I will be going back to the range with 5 each at 5.4grs and 5.6grs and see. I just want to be very careful cause a mentioned in another post bullseye can pressure spike pretty quick.

    185gr JHP in 45ACP-1000fps impossible

I've eliminated barrel and chronograph by firing factory ammo and fps are very close to ammo manufacturer spec's/fps. I do this on a regular basis whenever I'm working up loads just to make sure chronograph-Oehler 35 is good. I have to scales, redding beam scale and Gem-pro 250 along with check...

    185gr JHP in 45ACP-1000fps impossible

Based on incremental velocity gains in my first post and if they hold true at 6.4grs I'd be at 912fps so in order to get to 950's+ I'd be exceeding significantly any max loads I've researched. I'm thinking that maybe going with a slower burning powder as mentioned in previous posts might...maybe...

    185gr JHP in 45ACP-1000fps impossible

Have several manuals sierra max load 5.6grs bullseye=950fps, Lyman 6.0grs=976....that's why I'm asking the question about powder choice or am I doing something wrong ? Barrel is 5 inch in Springfield 1911 shooting Evergladesammo bullets.

    185gr JHP in 45ACP-1000fps impossible

Went to the range about a week ago and over a chronograph shot 5 rounds of 185gr JHP in 45 ACP seated 1.175 COAL under 4.6grs Bullseye powder lit by Federal Match primer resulted in 763fps. I was optimistic so I loaded 5 rounds each at 4.8grs, 5.0grs and 5.2 grs then went yesterday again and...

Can 1.167 COAL f/185gr JHP 45ACP be right

Well here are the results... As mentioned above the 4.6grs bulleye =763fps and I was optimistic but, then today tested 4.8grs=786fps, 5.0grs=800fps and 5.2grs=816. An average of 18fps increase for every .2gr increase in powder...not what I was expecting, heck I'd have to go 7+grs of powder to...

Can 1.167 COAL f/185gr JHP 45ACP be right

Sorry, I don't have any pics but the last pic at the bottom of your post looks very close to how my bullet looks seated. I did make it to the range yesterday and chronograph them under 4.6grs of bullseye and they ran at 763fps average, recoil was mild, primers looked good, fed and ejected...

Can 1.167 COAL f/185gr JHP 45ACP be right

At 1.167 did you cut back on powder charge? I'm using Bullseye and Sierra reloading manual list 4.2 to 5.6 and Lyman lists 3.5 to 6.0. I'm thinking that given the my shorter COAL that I'm going to go on the lighter side at about 4.6 and see what results I'll get...will be shooting over a chrony...

Can 1.167 COAL f/185gr JHP 45ACP be right

Clunk test is where you take the barrel out of the firearm and drop for comparison purposes a factory round into it...you'll hear go clunk and take note where the base of the case is, it ideally is just below flush. then turn barrel upside down and round should freely drop out. Now on a reloaded...

Can 1.167 COAL f/185gr JHP 45ACP be right

Recently received a 1000ct 185gr JHP 45 caliper bullets from Evergladesammo where there is nothing but rave reviews and based on appearance, diameter and weight I agree. After extensive research most COAL are around 1.220 - 1.230 with the shortest at 1.190. I then took some factory ammo with...

Haven't really tested for accuracy. Right now I'm just looking at fps.

Drasticly Diff Vel 125gr plated vs JHP-?

At 4.8grs of bullseye I'm pushing JHP 899fps which to me seems to be the upper limit I would go in a 38 pressure wise, so should I assume that at 4.8grs of bullseye pushing plated @825 is also getting towards the upper pressure limit as well ?

Drasticly Diff Vel 125gr plated vs JHP-?

Makes sense, just didn't think .0015 would net that significant a difference.
